Shade for One Side and Roof of a 17ft Caravan

So i bought an old Viscount caravan, 17ft pop top. And as soon as the sun hits it in the morning it heats up like an oven. So I want to shade at least one side of it and maybe the roof too. I see temporary carports for under $200 but the van might be too tall for that.

Anyway how can I shade this thing as cheaply as possible? I kinda bought it on a whim thinking it mlk be cool to live in and save rent money, just leech water and energy from mate’s house. But it’s not cool, like at all in any way. But I’m committed and I’m sure I shade it then an AC will stand a chance at cooling it.

  • I hope for your sake the BOM has the long range outlook wrong.

RADelaide summer in a likely poorly insulated tin shed on wheels.
Maybe try some shade cloth strung up over/above the van?
    .

    • Yeah the forecast is miserable. May need to spend time on old mates couch in the house, ha.

I thought about just throwing cloth over the van, but I’d want an air gap wouldn’t I?

      • Buy a sun reflecting tarp and put some pool noodles between it and the roof, and then tie it down. If you want it cheaper then some foam insulation could work between the tarp and the roof

Or look at other insulation stuff like

Key is getting the solar relecting tarp. However depending on quality this might not last more than a couple of years with needing to be replaced.

  • Orientate the long side to the north and you may get away with just adding an eve. If it's got an annexe put that up instead.

Go and have a look on any of the Aussie caravan FB sites. A well trodden path of options to look at. If your mate has a tree that would be a place to look at too.
Some days though youll be too hot for comfort, and its worth having a refuge - look at local library, shopping centre etc.
