  • my closest friend

    BCC, SCC or melanoma?

    • FFS! dont know the difference.. Cancer is cancer I thought. will report back when I talk to him next time.

If you are going to have one then BCC is the 'better' one.

        Types of skin cancers

one of my closest friend found out he got skin cancer, he is scared as hell

Before your friend gets too stressed it's worth his while to read up on the exact type he has.

      • +2

No. Some skin cancers (most common ones) are very treatable. The doctor will sort your friend out and would have told your friend what type it was (or maybe its just a biopsy to start)
Everyone should get skin checks once a year.

I have this habit of purchasing at the 'subscribe & save' price and, when the item arrives, I cancel the subscription. I feel like somewhat of a cheapskate and wonder if Bezos will ever catch on to me. Perhaps its paranoia, or the feeling of the so-called 'cost of living' pressures, aka banks and govt squeezing me.

I also think I am using OB as a channel to release my emotions like in counselling session.

    Thank you for reading.

That's how s&s is meant to be used

Bells has retired from Amazon and now does rockets. Some people forget out the S&S until overpriced items arrive, some cancel and that doesn’t worry Amazon. I don’t think prices on S&S are fixed and guaranteed as i once got some paper towels and price had gone up ?.
Cost of living pressured, rents, house prices they are the killer and with the $AU so low anything imported will cost more than it used to until $AU goes up again.

    • +2

If you ain’t cancelling your subscribe & save subscription then you’re doing it wrong. Also, best not to choose that as the reason when cancelling so they don’t get the analytics.

    • I bet amazon doesnt lose at all and its the product company itself that has to provide the 10% discount.

  • You should only buy Zinc sunscreens.

    • SO says that always.. never understood the reason. Hope you are not my SO in disguise 🤣

      • with sunscreen it’s zinc vs nano titanium dioxide, there were noises about absorbing nano titanium dioxide, not sure if that was scientific or the 5G tower crowd moving to another topic. At the end of the day sunscreen reduces risk of cancer more than not using it and people don’t always wear hats and a shirt. “ slip, slop slap” used to be the TV and radio add before social media.

There are good reasons why vast majority of sunscreens for babies contain only Zinc

        • Babies are much more sensitive, so all of those chemicals with the super long names are way more harmful to them than to adults.
Not saying they're not harmful to us, just not as much.

There are good reasons why vast majority of sunscreens for babies contain only Zinc

Every bit of advice that I have seen is that sunscreen should not be used at all on babies under 6 months and that at that age they should not be exposed to direct sunlight if possible.

When I looked at the Cancer Council only one of their eight products for kids contains Zinc (even that one says not to be used on kids under 6 months) so I'm not sure how you can claim that 'the vast majority' contain only zinc..

          • -1

@Grunntt: Cancer Council brand only care about selling you a sunscreen to protect your skin from cancer.
They won't be responsible for what may happen to the rest of your body organs after regular application of the cream with lots of dubious chemicals.

If you are happy to apply lots of artificial chemicals on your skin, go for it.

I will go with the natural Zinc sunscreens which are widely available.

And don't tell me that the processed food with lots of additives is as healthy as the natural food just because it's being widely manufactured and sold

@bob19: Definitely the way to totally miss the point being made -

              You state that

There are good reasons why vast majority of sunscreens for babies contain only Zinc

Feel free to show how your statement gets anywhere near reflecting the truth about the "vast majority".

eg have a look at the ingredients for all of the sunscreens marketed for kids/babies at Chemist Warehouse

I checked the ingredients in Nivea, Natio and Banana Boat and the closest I could find containing zinc also has a range of other compounds.

NIVEA Sun Kids Protect & Play SPF50 Sunscreen Roll On

              Zinc oxide 50 mg/g, Methylene bis-benzotriazolyl tetramethylbutyl phenol 25 mg/g, Bemotrizinol 20 mg/g, 4-methylbenzylidene camphor 10 mg/g. Contains: Phenoxyethanol, 1,2-Hexanediol, Caprylyl Glycol. Store below 30°C.

By the way, not too sure where you managed to come to all of those other conclusions about what I think - your comments relate to absolutely nothing that I wrote.

              • @Grunntt: You totally miss the point that there are some sunscreens which contain Zinc and do not contain other dubious chemicals. That's why I won't buy Nivea or many other which you refer to.

Interested to hear your thoughts and reasoning! I used to think that too but this video was pretty interesting (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JckfmlbU5C8 )

Subjective tl;dw is you probably need to apply more than you think and more frequently than you think, but the Australian brands are all pretty good tbh (and surprisingly Zinc wasn't even superior to some of the other brands)

Hm, even if that were true, is that the best way to base purchasing decisions? They also recommend soft foods and formula for babies, yet as adults most of us would benefit from a wider range of foods. Perhaps one shouldn't overlook what's developmentally appropriate and generalise from it…

            • @bob19: I have to ask - why have you copy/pasted the same reply to this post as you did to mine?
Seems like you have a limited understanding of the subject and just want to throw out your opinion as fact whilst accusing others of things that they haven't even mentioned in their post.

No one has disagreed in any significant way with you so far but you are yet to support your claim with any examples or evidence.

              • @Grunntt: I copied it in case someone hasn't read my post above.
                Enjoy the artificial chemicals.

Funny I've just mentioned this video below.

This is good stuff. Our go-to choice, it doesn't smear into clothing, sweat out or go oily like the cheap brands.

  • +3

I'd advise against spray sunscreen as you pretty much have to use the entire can to cover the body to actually be protected from the sun. To be clear, the problem is not the sunscreen but the fact that most people won't apply spray sunscreen as they should.

Neutrogena has excellent sunscreens but spray in general is problematic.
