Same price at the Good guys also (click the price beat button) stack with your recent $20 off voucher if you were one of the lucky targeted ones.

  • How is this model? More for just spot cleans or good enough to clean a whole apartment as the only vacuum?

    • +3

It does the job. I recommend getting a power tool battery Adapter when the included one inevitably dies (like all batteries do). Assuming you have some power tool batteries already.

Obligatory post to remind everyone Dyson are scum and didnt connect the battery balancing in the V8.

So when your batteries 'fail", they are likely good as new. Just not all at the same charge at the same.time. So the battery thinks it's dead. I've never seen an actual dead Dyson V8 battery…but heaps not functioning.

Grab a V8 from an ecycle place for nothing (I see around 5 a month), then spend $20 from Ali Express for either a drill battery adapter or a BMS and repair the existing battery.

Sir Dyson…doing his bit to create rediculous waste and landfill… Scum!

        • What is this ecycle place you speak of? any you can recommend in Melb?

        • What is a BMS and how is it done ?

        • +2

Thanks for the "reminder" (I don't think this is common knowledge?)

So couldn't we trickle-charge the individual cells then?

          • +1

            @idonotknowwhy: You would have to:

            • open the battery pack (not easy)
            • desolder the individual batteries
            • charge each one
            • resolder the pack together
            • close the pack (almost impossible if damaged while opening)

            Possible? yes.

Many people have tried this and noted the effort involved outweighs the other options..

            • @jason andrade: Just buy a new battery, as others have said Dyson are very good to deal with and probably just send one out for free.

            • +1

@jason andrade: Unfortunately not. Once the cells are out of balance, the onboard chip basically kills the power all together. You can reflash it (code is on GitHub).

As for balancing individually before it 'dies'. Apparently a bad idea as well as it notes a change in cell voltage and goes into self destruct mode anyway.

        • Thanks for pointing this out.

        • +4

Our battery died at around the 3-4 year mark well out of warranty, Dyson online chat sent a replacement no questions asked without much difficulty.
          Worth asking their support

          • +1

@esosite: Yeah, they have been called out on the battery situation. Good to know that they are sending replacements.

But from an environmental position, still a disaster as the cells themselves are still perfect.

        • This is good info. I know that older Ryobi batteries, particularly the old 5.0a, suffered from the same balancing issue when discharged quickly.

Pretty poor form from the manufacturer.

        • Does v7 also lack a BMS?

      • +4

holy mustard i didnt know this was a thing.

        • +3

If I've reached one who understands how wrong this is…job done.

          • @tunzafun001: thanks dad
just bought an ozito adapter bc our 8 year old v8 has just recently started dying with the motor head on it

            • @Puffy Vulva: Where did you get the ozito adapyer from ?

            • @Puffy Vulva: I'd love to know where you got the ozito adapter from too please (link?), as I've got a V8 - recently bought a replacement battery off Amazon which is working great but I have a LOT of those Ozito PXC batteries so an adaptor would be perfect for me.

EDIT - Looks like you can get them from many places (Amazon, Ebay, Catch for about $35 local, or way cheaper if you want to import from Ali)

            • @Puffy Vulva: Could you please share the link for the Ozito adapter you bought please? Thanks

      • Which drill batttery adapter would you recommend? I have a V8 and a Makita cordless drill set at home and some 3V batteries, could you please put the link of the adapter here? Thanks.

We do a whole 4x2 house (small for a 4x2) with hardwood floors on the low setting on a single charge.

Occasionally do the rugs etc on high as needed too.

      Works great!

      • +1

As above, the high setting is more likely to throw your battery pack out of balance. It will "fail", but will still be perfectly fine.

        • How many years can you expect to get out of it when balancing regularly? (E.g. 3x weekly uses)

          • @Embaloo: Using it doesn’t “balance” it.

The point of the claim above is that the v8 batteries can get out of balance and there’s no circuitry included to “fix” it again.

Eventually the whole pack fails because of a single cell and has to be “replaced” as it is not user serviceable.

            • @jason andrade: Mostly correct. Sadly the circuitry is actually in there on all the early models…Dyson chose not to connect it.

            • @jason andrade: I was meaning that if usage is 3x weekly, and you balance it as needed, what's the expected lifepan of the battery?

              • +1

@Embaloo: Official replacement battery is $139 directly from Dyson. So factor that into it.

People can't tell you how long your one will last because everyone uses it differently.

If it dies within the warranty period, you most likely can get it replaced. Outside you still have some wiggle room of consumer guarantee.

Overall, it seems like it has a pretty dumb charging circuit, so don't leave it on charge for too long.

  • This or spend almost double for a V10. Coming from a dying V6.

    • Have you considered Miele?

      • which model you reckon?

        • +2

I do not have a Miele, I just purchased Dyson v8. But I did strongly consider Miele and did a load of research.

These are the two I considered, may be worth look at for yourself?
Miele Duoflex HX1 - This is comparable in price to the Dyson v8
Miele Triflex HX2 - This model is a decent step up from the Dyson v8 spec wise, and accessories you get. Price can be found around $450-500.

Thing that put me off buying Miele in the end, was watching some guy show you how to empty the dust. Looked very messy and overcomplicated. I also saw that the Dyson does a better job from preventing all the dust and bad stuff re-entering your home as you are vacuuming.
I've been using the Dyson v8 for a week or so now, and I am still unsure if I made the right call over the HX2.

    • +1

      This.
I upgraded from the v6 to the v8 just a couple weeks ago. Not much of an upgrade. But like did I really need a significant Vaccum cleaner upgrade? No.
It does the job. I’m happy. Saved the difference from buying something 1000$+

      • +1

Should be double runtime on the v8 over the v6?

        • Probably, although I replaced my V6 battery to a massive 3x one a year ago. Battery life was never an issue for me

    • Got a relative a V10 a week ago (The Good Guys for $667) from a V7 and it's a lot better. Longer run time, easy emptying, can leave it plugged in on charge and it doesn't overcharge (which can shorten battery life). Supposed to not get tangled with hair. Once you go over the V11 they become a lot heavier.

The V10 was at Dyson for $649 (I think) with extra heads. Not there now.

      • We have had a few Dyson's and never heard of this overheating issue you talk about. We leave ours on charge all the time and battery generally lasts 3ish years, with heavy use.

        • +2

I didn't mention overheating. Any lithium battery has a shorter life if stored (or on charger) at 100% all the time.

I have one 14 years old and only on its second battery. I don't leave them on the charger.

          • -1

            @wfdTamar:

            I didn't mention overheating

            Sorry, overcharging not overheating.

I have one 14 years old and only on its second battery. I don't leave them on the charger.

So still using a battery stick Dyson from 2010? Impressive considering the Dyson sticks only came out in 2015.

    • This. Great deal and has all the attachments. Pretty limited without any. Can't see why you would spend more on any other models.. or get a shark.

can leave it plugged in on charge and it doesn't overcharge

These you can too, the light turns off when it's charged, but can unplug anyway after charging as a good habit in general.

    • The v8 is a huge upgrade from the V6 and well worth it if you vaccuum regularly.

      We have 2 x v6 and bought a v8 and it’s so much better.

The only reason I haven’t yet bought a second v8 is that we also have robot vacuums (lubluelu).

Keeping in mind Dyson is upto the V15 now..

      • Think I'll get the V8. I watched a few comparisons with V10 and it seems relatively close in performance. I'm sure V10 is an improvement all around but in terms of real world gain and $$$. I think V8 would be OK for our needs.

    • The motors are actually excellent. A drill battery adapter from Ali Express will make it good as new (obviously clean all filters as well, tap / blast out the cyclone tubes).

The roller design is rubbish. There will be hair wrapped on one side jamming it/ causing excess battery drain.

  • +1

Remember to clean the filters regularly, especially the pre-filter. Dirt gets trapped on the inside, not the outside!

  • I have this, finding suction to be weak.So I bought a used V10 on FB. V10 is heavier but much better at mid setting.

    • +1

I think most of the work is done by the motobrush. Loosening the dust first. The actual suction is pretty mid, but still picks up quite a bit on carpet.

The reviews seems to suggest there isn't that much difference between the V8 and V10 in terms of performance, but V10 is better in longevity.

      • The V10 and later models have much better battery life from all reviews but if you have a relatively small place and are budget conscious the V8 is better value at this price.

    • Check the little flap/ valve at the start. Make sure it swings loosely. Seen a few jammed shut = bugger all suction.
Then pull hair from both sides of roller (it will be jammed under the roller connector, ie not visible when the roller is in place - classic Dyson rubbish design there).
They fixed it on the V10. Hence battery life is better, as its simply not needing to deal with jammed hair in the roller.

  • +2

    How hard does it suck?
    Asking for a friend

  • Have had the V8 for years now, battery needs replacing every 2 years apart from that I found the included head not great on hard floors, ended up getting the Soft Roller Cleaner Head for Dyson V8 for $150 now its a reasonable stick vacuum.

  • Does NP10HOME give $10 off for anyone else?
I just purchased this unit for $364 end price.

    • I tried, but the code couldn't be applied to my purchase.
