If I Decline a AP Parcel and Have It RTS Will They Have to Pay Extra Return Postage?

My parcel is awaiting collection at the PO, if I let them know to return the parcel back to the sender will the sender have to pay for return postage?

Long story short eBay seller posted my parcel over a week after paying and after speaking to eBay I've been told I am within my right to return it back to sender at their expense. It's not an expensive parcel ($55) so I hope by me not accepting and having it returned to them they won't have to pay for the return postage.

    “I didn’t order this, I’m not expecting it… I don’t know what it is… yeah, I’m not signing/taking delivery… can you just return to sender… thanks.”

If you don't collect it from the P.O. within the timeframe provided by Australia Post, I believe that the parcel will be returned to the sender, automatically.

    • Or destroyed in some scenarios!

Generally RTS is billed back to the sender.

    • I had a buyer ask to cancel an item after I'd sent it. I told them put RTS on it. Didn't have to pay return post, the PO worker just franked the stamps.
Also sent another buyer something and they didn't pick up from the post office. It was returned to me and i didnt have to pay for that either.

Watch out for sender asking you send to Chullora, which is where a lot of Chinese drop shippers use, especially if there address is written as something else in the return. eBay will sort that out. Just doing RTS is not going to keep you safe.

    • Yeah I have noticed that, but this is a private seller. But thanks for the heads up.

But why? To prove a point or did you just decide you don’t want it anymore?

I'm guessing OP wanted the item before Christmas and using sellers tardiness as a get out of jail free card.

No not really I was willing to wait up to a few days after xmas even tho it was important it was that time sensitive, and oh boy you caught me! I'm in the clear for a whole $55!

      • Gangsta!….

This is the internet, surely you knew this would happen.

Did they promise next day postage or something? It's been Christmas, people are busy, away on holidays etc.

    • No but I messaged him prior to buying the item and asked if he could post it that day if I paid for it right then and there.

      • Did they answer the message and agree to send it that day?
I get so many buyer notes and messages with payments asking for specific things and I accommodate where I can but it's not always possible.

Edit- If the seller has used eparcel or my business post they will be charged a returned fee. You can just leave the parcel uncollected for a couple of weeks and it is then automatically returned to the sender.

        • Yeah I didn't leave him a note after making payment, and he even messaged back asking me make the payment asap so he could head to the Post office then proceeded to not respond after payment.

          • @arknski: That is really slack of them then.
If eBay agrees that you are within your rights to send it back to them at their expense it would be easier to pick the parcel up and then use eBay returns to return it. That way it will all be tracked through eBays system.

@Any thing: I mean yeah it was rather slack of them and that would be the way I would normally go about any returns if the item was faulty/not as described but despite this I was just hoping they wouldn't have to fork out extra money for the return postage, as I would feel somewhat bad about it even tho I shouldn't.

              • @arknski: I would be more inclined to return it officially, the sender might not have put a return address on the package or there are many other variables that might end up with you not getting your refund. eBay should be able to let you know what reason to select for the return.

@arknski: Yeah that's poor service then.

        • -1

Yeah I'll probably do that, despite the situation it's only $55 and I don't mind waiting a while for my refund.

      • What's their selling history like? If they haven't sold in a while they might have been caught out by eBay managed payments. Some sellers (for whatever reason) like the money in their bank account before they send the item.

theyre a regular seller with mostly positive feedback.

  • Next post: "How do I prove Australia Post returned a parcel and which address do they return too" ….

Goodluck getting any money back with the current action plan ;)

  • There is no simple answer to this. ePacel customers often have a RTS charge as part of their contract. MyPost Business & retail customers generally aren't charged, but may have a "More to Pay" sticker put on the package when it's returned to sender and then it's at the discretion of the final post office whether or not they will charge the customer for the returned package.

What was the estimated delivery date shown on the eBay website for the package? If it was within that date range, and you mark it as Return to Sender, you may be ineligible for buyer protection. You would probably be OK if the seller has agreed in writing to you returning it.
