Why Is Resident Evil 4 Rated R18+, but Dead Space Is Rated MA15+?

Couldn't help but think it should be the other way around. Both are extremely graphic without a doubt, but personally still think that Dead Space should be rated R18+.

I haven't played these games, but it is likely there was a sex or drug reference in the more restrictive one that tipped it over the edge.

I assume these are the two games, the site isn't easy to navigate: Dead Space and Resident Evil 4.
It's the themes and violence that are putting RE4 into R18 category

FWIW most countries somewhat agree and at least gave them equivalent ratings, including New Zealand which piggybacks off our ratings and reassesses MA15+/R18+ with R13/R16/R18.

The Classification board is notoriously inconsistent. Things on the MA/R border can be a dice roll. They also don’t play the games, they get sent gameplay footage/highlights, so things can seem better/worse depending on how much context is preserved.

On top of that, not everything goes in front of classifiers anymore. Both films and games can be self-classified under various schemes.

In fact, when one version of the Dead Space remake got self-classified by the IARC tool, it did get an R18+.
