More Telecom Using CGNAT for New Customers

Somewhat of a PSA I suppose.

More Telecom are now using CGNAT for (some?) new customers. Something to be aware of if you are thinking of connecting.

Apparently you can opt out (with varying degrees of difficulty depending on the IQ of the tech you speak with), or you can pay for a static IP.

I noticed one of my relative’s public IP address kept rotating between a pool of IP addresses every few days and it sent me digging. I was under the impression More offered sticky (not static) IP addresses. They connected a few months back. My IP address with More hasn’t changed in years…

For home network access, I gave up requesting cgnat disabling and just started using tailscale (instead of previously running a wireguard vpn)

Obviously some applications like gaming servers that's not a suitable option, but for my use, worked just as easily

    • Even running tailscale, it can be much harder for it to create a direct connection when on CGNAT. I suggest opting out if you can to avoid relaying your connections via the derp servers.

      • it can be much harder for it to create a direct connection when on CGNAT

Really? It's an outbound connection, and I couldn't find any reference to cgnat being an issue when doing the initial research.

        • Yeah definitely can be. Also depends on the connection type on the other end.

Tailscale will generally struggle to create a direct connection between 2 clients behind CGNAT.

For a direct connection, sure, but their relay servers are for that exact reason when such a connection fails.

Tailscale will even show you whether it's connection is via a derp server.
As all my current usage is behind cgnat at each end I'll have to keep an eye on it and see if it ever reports any issues.

@SBOB: Yes, I'm talking about direct connections. I'm not sure what you use tailscale for, but the derp relay's are very slow. For me it renders my applications useless, hence why I brought it to your attention.

  • Only have two problems I have with CGNAT.

    1. Every so often I'll be refused access to sites like CarSales because someone previously with the latest address I've been given had run a robot to scrape information from the site.

    2. After I unplug/reboot my phone, sites like OzBargain 2FA me to ensure the new IP address I'm connecting from is me.

  • Does anyone know the range of IP's that would show im on CGNAT?

I believe you should be able to log into your router and see your assigned public IP, if it is in a private range then you are on CGNAT.

if you don't know wither or not you are on CGNAT, decent chance you are not affected wither or not you are on CGNAT

      • Honestly I don't use it for remote access but have had plenty of issues during gaming. While you are right I'm not 100% sure I've had multiple things point to it as the issue.

        • had plenty of issues during gaming

there, you know you are on CGNAT and know its causing issues.

They have the internet on computers now?

I am more than okay if they want to use CGNAT, AS LONG AS it can be opt out.

because for those who don't know what CGNAT is, it's unlikely gonna affect them what so ever.

    • This….

I'm ok with CGNAT as long as I can opt out for free.

  • Damn.
I have intermittent issues on paramount+ when watching live sport because it thinks I'm on a VPN on superloop. Figured out because they use CG-NAT. Funnily enough connecting to VPN bypasses the issue 😂

Was looking to churn to More as a CBA customer and 40% off for 12 months.

  • I had no trouble disabling CGNAT with Superloop a few months ago. I opened the shitty Superloop AI chat box, typed human and went from there. If anyone tries this be sure your using a web browser on PC. I couldn't get the online chat to work via Kiwi Browser or chrome on my phone.

Took less than 5 minutes to opt-out through calling support

Request to disable CG-NAT, dynamic IP is fine
Reason: unable to access security cameras (try to keep it simple, avoid mentioning self-hosted services incase it's not in their script)

    • Good tip. I said it's for gaming which worked for me.

  • Not just new customers, more is doing it to any unsuspecting customers too, they switched mine sometimes last month to cgnat without any notification and took me a couple of days to figure out why I couldn't access my network remotely. You have to chat with them to be put back onto dynamic.
Also when you upgraded to fttp they also conveniently put your new connection on cgnat too, had to chat with them twice last month for the same thing.
