I have been gifted this compact hedge trimmer and grass shears tool with the 2.5ah battery but without a charger. I was considering getting a Ryobi One+ drill driver, and maybe a multi tool anyway, so I’m wondering what charger would be best, and if I should just get a different kind of battery (maybe the 4ah) based on the items I want to use them with.
If any one has a lead on current deals that would be great, as I know they rarely have “discounts” as such.
Thank you

Thanks, I’m just not sure if it matters which charger or if they all work with all batteries.
Any of the many 18V ONE+ chargers will work, they vary by charge rate from 1.5A to 5A
If you're going to buy another Ryobi tool, just buy a kit instead of skin only and it'll come with another battery and a charger.
Yes I was looking at kits vs skins but I figured I’d keep an eye out for a cheap one on marketplace, and wasn’t sure if they are all the same
Who hates you enough to gift you that. I have one, used it three times and never again. Absolute rubbish.
My dad has one for cutting the 50mm wide strip of grass that grows under his pool fence and it works well
We have been using ours every fortnight for a couple of years, and it's great!
Take it back to Bunnings if you are not happy, and they will refund you - no questions asked.
I bought this and returned it after trying it once. Never again will I buy the cheapest Ryobi tool of a range.
It was useless, it fell apart and wouldn't click in properly. My brother, so that tracks! Haha
No they loved it and it worked well for them but they moved to a house that needed a considerably larger tool so they gave me this one. I only have a few small hedges mainly so I’m not concerned if it’s not perfect. Anything is better than nothing.
If you weren’t planning on getting a drill soon, just buy a charger of fb marketplace (I’d sell you my spare but you’re too far away)… if you want to buy into the ryobi ecosystem, get the drill kit (which comes with a battery and charger) and you’ll have a second battery so that you can swap when one battery is charging.
Also, 2.0Ah will be fine for drill and hedge trimmer, I wouldn’t bother with the 4.0Ah unless you’re going into higher drain tools
This seems like a pretty good deal: https://www.bunnings.com.au/ryobi-18v-one-drill-driver-start…
Ye I’m keeping an eye on marketplace, just wasn’t sure if any old charger would do or if I needed a specific level of charger
I’m pretty sure any ryobi one+ charger will work. Unsure if some are faster than others… I suspect the battery management system (in the battery) stops the charger from over charging the battery.
There’s a good chance you’ll end up with multiple battery systems (ryobi, ozito, Aldi)…which is kind of annoying. You can get a battery adapter so that say, an ozito battery will work in a ryobi tool. Ryobi batteries tend to be on the expensive side compared to ozito/aldi… the adapter can cost about the same amount as a new genuine battery though…
Unsure if some are faster than others
Yes they are different speeds. Typically the bigger the charger the faster it is, at keast with newer ones.
I bought a makita battery to ryobi tool adaptor for under $15. Got some makita and ryobi stuff at work, but only a couple of ryobi batteries. Its handy to be able to have the extra batteries for the ryobi tools.
@Euphemistic: Yep. I've also noticed some of the the bigger high amp chargers have built in cooling systems to negate heat caused by quick charging.
based on the items I want to use them with.
Such as?
If it is a tool that requires high speed spinning, get a 4ah or bigger. Things like the blower, whipper snipper, circular saw, grinder etc will benefit from a larger battery. iMO its worth paying a little more to get the bigger battery, unless all you are going to get is the drill.
As above, its worth checking marketplace etc for secondnhand items. Ive picked up too many items for half the retail price and the majoirty of them have worked as good as new.
Ye so far my main additions would be a drill driver and a multi tool. Right now anything else would be a frivolous purchase.
If buying second hand batteries check the manufacture date which is shown on the battery label.
Thanks. I didn’t know that. What should I b looking for? How old is too old?
How long is a piece of string? I have had a battery die ar age about 7-8y, made in about 2013. I still have batteries marked 2017 going strong.
What area of Melbourne are you in?
Inner south east
If you were in WA I'd just give you one of the dozen surplus chargers I have taking up space in my garage,
Fast charger mounted on my tool bench, one inside in laundry, (Dyson vac with Ryobi battery converter)
Another floating round and the rest just taking up spaceThere was a time not.long back when heaps of deals for Ryobi gear came with charger and batteries
That’s very kind, I am keeping an eye out for people clearing theirs out but should be able to pick one up cheap too
The good deals are all the ones with a red "limited time only" on the box when you go in store. They are the "sale" items that come out for the special shopping events like black friday, tax time etc.
If you dont get the limited time only offers, you are only saving approx $20-50 if you are getting a normal kit.
Thank you, I’ll keep an eye out for those
That’s odd, I thought all of the kits came with a charger? If you’re in Sydney I have a brand new spare charger you can have.
I’m in Melbourne, 20km west of CBD, I’ve got a Ryobi charger you can have if you want, it’s a BCL1418 it’s not a slim line model but works.
If you’re going for a battery upgrade I’d suggest the twin 5ah batteries comes with charger $250 good value.Oh thank you that’s so kind! Well, I decided to go with the drill kit suggested by another person above so it’s come with a charger that I seem to be able to use for this too and I think one charger will be more than enough for me now
Your local Cashies or other secondhand dealer will have a selection of (cheap) Ryobi chargers
