Should I Trust Good Guys to Install a Rangehood?

I've bought appliances from Good Guys before and opted for installation for a fridge and washing machine in my new home so they can just wheel it in and connect it for me.

It's convenient, but it's clear they are always in a rush.

A fridge and washing machine is simple enough, but I am considering of buying and replacing my current wall canopy rangehood.

Replacing and installing this would be a lot more complicated. There's a lot of measurements to get right from what I can tell.

Should I bother with Good Guys installation on this?

I'm worried they'll rush and not do a proper job.

It is nice that they'll take away my old rangehood and dispose it for me though.

GG uses tradies registered with them or do your research or install it yourself. Just buy a Rangehood that matches with the current model, anyway there aren't many varieties when it comes to Rangehoods.

      What he said above …

They outsource to local tradies in area +++ who they already have agreements with

This means less chance of something going wrong … as opposed to DYI + some of those dodgy/unregistered tradies out there … (or CASH ONLY jobs).

But ultimately - if things do wrong, it is on tradie.
(He will have to "sign-off" on the job as being complete - BEFORE GG will pay him).

Have previously used GG tradie deal … To install a split system aircon - as suggested, they did use a local tradie near to my suburb … (But no issues with that install).

    • I wouldn't say that. I had an installation of an oven by the Good Guys and it is definitely not up to code.

It's meant to be screwed in but they just let it sit there. Good side is I can drag it out and clean the cockroaches every now and then.

I asked for their license but they never produced it. I can't be bothered getting it up to code again because as long as it doesn't catch fire I'm alright.

No, unless your current and new range hood is 100% match in terms of measurement. I did the GG installation and turns out my internal measurements was different for the new one so effectively paid $180 for someone to dispose of my old range hood lol

    • Yeah, unless it's 100% a replacement one to one, they will just cut corners in the job. You need to pay a correct professional that can do the other work to make it fit.

For a rangehood, they might mount some wood in the corners just to make it fit, but it will look ugly and you will need to get a carpenter in to fix the job.

Otherwise, like your case, they just take away your old rangehood and don't install the new one because it's too hard.

No. There are specialists for rangehood installations and ventilation. Unless they're using one of them but Id suspect it's just some handyman…

    • I'm not sure why you got downvotes, but my experience from Good Guys is exactly what you described, albeit with an oven.

Dimensions were the same, but screws were in the wrong place. Even this was too hard for them.

  • Measure and check twice and then print out and check again and only when you are 1000% confident that the replacement is exactly mm perfect woth what you have then and only then pull the trigger and gamble your money. Remember the adds you lose more than you win or was that….

I replaced my own range hood - bought the same width unit as the old unit. it was easy to swap it out with the old.

    what one did you buy?

OP paid for fridge installation. There is no way he will DIY a range hood 🤣

  • Oh, I totally feel you on this! Good Guys are great for easy stuff like fridges and washing machines—they just wheel it in, plug it up, and boom, done. But yeah, a rangehood feels like a whole different ballgame. It's definitely more complicated, and if you're worried about them rushing it, I don’t blame you. When I needed to install my oven, I was in the same boat. I didn’t want to gamble on a quick, sloppy job. So, I did a bit of digging and found this service called Oven Fixer honestly, they were amazing! Super detail-oriented, professional, and they got everything just right.

I’d say maybe look for someone like them for your rangehood. It’s worth the peace of mind for sure.

    Good luck with it!
