Nanoleaf Essentials Lightstrips Starter Kit 2m $48 in-Store Only @ Officeworks

100

I was told by in-store staffs people have been pricematching this SKU crazy for the past 2 days LoL

Officeworks has now price-matched and beat Nanoleaf's listing page by $1. It was listed at $71 originally.
I suggest to go into JB or other retailers with price-beat policy to score the best deals.

This is the Matter-over-Thread version. I still pick this as I am trying to migrate my Home-Kit smart home devices off home WiFI (so I don't have to setup VLANs :P ) to Matter-over-Thread. Contrary to popular internet opinion, it DOES have circadian lighting support.
It started with Nanoleaf putting this SKU on their clearance page at $49.99 (+ delivery): https://nanoleaf.me/en-AU/products/essentials/lightstrips/li…
Nanoleaf has released a new version (https://nanoleaf.me/en-AU/products/essentials/lightstrips/mu…) which runs on (to many's surprise), Matter-over-WiFi instead of the Thread protocol.

Tip: Other people often complains Nanoleaf are hard to pair. The successful tried-and-true best workflow is: Pair in your smart home system first (i.e. Apple Home/Google Home) first, then go into the Nanoleaf app to pick the device up. You can do firmware updates either before or after this whole pairing process, no difference.

Merry Christmas! (and Happy New Year!) :D

General disclaimer if you are watching Nanoleaf products or never have one: It is both Bluetooth and Thread enabled, but really, Nanoleaf built it fully expects to run on Thread protocol.
Early days for their proprietary Litewave protocol.

  • How does this compare to Philips Hue?

    • +2

Hey mate, TL;DR version: Overall, on lighting front, I'd say it is a like-for-like sideway comparison.

      Full version:
I don't Philips Hue at my place, but I can share my observations with a close work mate who went down the Philips Hue ecosystem.
Primary driver being, he absolutely rejects Apple iDevices. He paid the upfront cost with Philips Hue hub and a few bulbs at one of the past bundle deals to get his home up and running. The issue he now faces is, he is constantly unable to expand to full house deployment because (according to him,) everything Philips Hue is expensive.

On my side, I started on 6 Cygnet's HomeKit-compatible smart switches first because I wanted to monitor my electricity bills. I started bidding on second hand HomePod mini after Apple shut down the iPad as HomeKit hub acting as the Thread border router. Then jumped on a Nanoleaf E27 3pack deal (also posted here on OzB). Then jumped on the Black Friday deal on Eve Energy smart switch (matter) as I want to continue monitor my energy bills.
So my acquisition stategy has been: Thread Border Router > Thread-enabled mesh router before looking at end-point devices.

Everything is fast and instant on at my home now. No dropouts or fail (fingers crossed!)
Full home coverage: HomePod mini (x4) as thread border router on all corners of my house, E27 bulbs in lightwells as thread router/extender up high and Eve Energy smart switch as thread router/extender from powerpoints.

My conscious note is: If you are entrenched in the Philips Hue (and Zigbee) ecosystem, then I suggest stick with it.

      • So you have not issues with device dropout? The only benefit of Philips Hue is the hub as it only takes up one node of your router. Whereas Nanoleaf will use additional nodes which may clog up your wifi. Have you had that happen to you?

        • +1

No, (fingers crossed), I have not experienced device dropouts. I have also tested Matter/Thread's 'self-healing' network claim.

Prior to recent updates where Apple allows users to manually pick the Thread border router (Leader), sometimes, Apple Home will pick a HomePod that is placed a bit further out as the Leader. I didn't like it because I have visuals on all the devices I placed at home. What I did was, I flicked the wall switch to cut power. Then I issue a voice command (e.g. switch on/off whatever lights/bulb at whatever% brightness). When the original Leader is unresponsive, it forced to go to another Thread border router. Thereby successfully reassigning the Leader device.

Now I just occassionally go into the Apple Home app to check who is the Leader and haven't had to manually select so far.
But I must confess I open the Eve Energy app religiously to check power consumption (because, $$$ energy bills T_T"|||) and check the Thread network's In/Out radio quality. As I now saturated my home with Thread, life is smooth (for now). I am grateful as I did all these in preparation to put a smart lock on my main entry door.
