If you want Merlin firmware support, get this router. The link I provided is for refurbished and costs $155 but probably fine.

  • Would two of these in a mesh setup be a better alternative to something like the tp link deco packs?

    • I'm using 2 of these as AI mesh with Asus AX82U as a primary router. Works flawlessly!

      • Ah okay, I was thinking more of using only these two routers. Not adding these to an extra router.

        • You can use it easily as an independent routers or in a mesh.

  • The $75 one should be ok for a basic NBN connection?
Moving into an apartment temporarily away from home and need a cheap modem to access the internet.

    • This will work if you have a FTTP/FTTC/HFC connection. If your place is FTTN/FTTB, you'll need a modem/router instead.

      • I believe it's a HFC connection to the apartment building

But can run OpenWRT custom firmware, as the RT-AX1800S has identical specs to the RT-AX54 https://forum.openwrt.org/t/is-the-asus-rt-ax1800s-supported…

  • Any good for wifi extension?

  • What's the difference between the RT-AX1800S and the RT-AX54P which also mentions AX1800?

    RT-AX54P is currently $99 at JB: https://www.jbhifi.com.au/products/asus-rt-ax54hp-dual-band-…

  • anyone know if this is a worthwhile switch from a zte H1600?

  • This is still available

  • I’m having trouble with my Deco M5 delivering <100mbps at each device despite being on a 1000mbps connection. The Deco app reports in its SpeedTest >750mbps. People on the forums suggest setting it up in Access Point mode to get around this issue but when I put it into Access Point mode (with the main router connected to the HFC NTD), the internet does not work at all.

If I get one of these and set up my Deco M5 in Access Point mode, would I be able to create an effective mesh and land better speeds? Should I just quit stuffing around and get a brand new mesh system with WiFi 6E instead?

    • It sounds like you might have QoS enabled on your Deco M5 which could be the reason why each device is only getting 100Mbps.

Otherwise for your Deco M5 to be configured in Access Point Mode you would need to make sure it's properly connected to the main router where your DHCP most likely is.

However, I would still suggest for you to consider replacing your Deco M5 to improve your mesh setup.

      • Thanks for weighing in. I had adjusted QoS to >1000mbps a while back and still get the degradation.

Think you’re right in that it might be time for an upgrade.
