Tissot Chrono XL Classic $509.00 (Was $730) Delivered @ David Jones

190

Big fan of Tissot watches as a great value for money entry level swiss swatch.

I would consider them a C-Tier level brand in terms of watch making, accuracy, finishing and appearance but any higher tiers would be more $$$.

I have a Tissot 1853 PRC 200 that I used to wear daily since uni years and still going strong 12 years later from an Ozbargain deal (replaced batteries a few times, seal and leather strap about once every year only). Not only that but it's retained its value and is selling twice my original purchase price.

The sapphire crystal scratch resistance glass is amazing.

Just for my knowledge and my next watch, what would you consider the A and B Tier level? Is it the Rolex and Omega brands?

I’ve the Tissot Chemin des Tourelles and I thought that’s a beautiful piece already

This is my personal opinion, and the tiers are in no way meant as a disrespect, just in reference to S tier being the highest level brands. Also not an exhaustive or definitive list because there are a lot of grey areas where brands produce pieces that are above/below their typical range and so they creep into tiers above or tiers below.

S tier - brands that OzBargainers don't really need to concern themselves with
      Examples: Lange, Patek, AP, VC

A tier - if you're very well off with considerable disposable income (usually if you're owning several pieces as a collection etc)
Examples: higher end pieces of - Rolex, Omega, IWC, Cartier, Grand Seiko; lower end pieces of JLC

AB tier - if you're fairly well off and often those looking for a "one watch" collection
Examples: lower end pieces of Rolex, mid/low end Omega or Grand Seiko, Cartier

B tier - similar to AB tier but maybe you're more utilitarian or intend to wear these daily
Examples: mid/high end Longines, Tudor, low end Grand Seiko, Tag Heuer, Breitling

C tier - probably pseudo-luxury pieces, to be honest it's an area I don't see a lot of people preferring (they'd either go a tier above or a tier below)
Examples: Mido, Rado, Hamilton, high end Tissot, lowest end Longines and Tag Heuer

D tier - a lot of enthusiast collectors in this area I'd say, because you get elements of solid watch making at relatively affordable prices
Examples: higher end Seiko, mid-high end Tissot

E tier - "normal" watches I guess (and mostly Quartz)
Examples: low/mid end Seiko, Citizen, maybe some nicer Casios, etc

      • I think its a decent list - but I would say that your tier list is directly correlated with price. (higher price = higher tier)

for me (being an ozbargainer) - upper middle seiko is pretty much S tier, you can't beat the dial quality, finishing at that level of price. They don't do well in the timekeeping sector, but easily surmountable when you go to upper tier seiko with the spring drives.

That said, seiko probably recognises where they are at, and is adjusting their own quality to better match the prices they are offering, which is extremely sad.

        • Have a look at Sinn or Hanhart instead of Grand Seiko. It’s even better to stretch your budget and get a Longines Zulu Spirit titainium rather than an overpriced Seiko. Having just looked at Grand Seiko diving watches at 13k I really don’t feel they would keep their value. Would rather get a Rolex explorer from a dealer in Japan on Chrono24 than purchase that.

    • depends on your budget

      • Not sure yet, since I’m just a young adult and planning for a nice looking watch when I’ve hit a certain milestone in my career life

There's a few lists going around with differing opinions. Part of it's all subjective and biased as Dr Fruit mentioned, there's huge ranges within the brand and personal tastes and preferences on the design and style.

The price of watches do somewhat correlate to their quality, watch making and luxury, but for bang for buck = Tissot, Timex and Seiko is great.

But as an Ozbargainer, Rolex would sit up on S tier for me due to their resale value and affordability compared to other ultra luxury watches going 100k+.

You could get a second hand Seiko which would retain their value well and is popular amongst affordable watch collectors https://www.facebook.com/groups/1992355034417458/

  • A Tissot 1853 PRC 200 or any quartz watch from an entry level brand would never appreciate in price or retain its value. Just because the RRP for the model line increases in price, doesn't mean your 2nd hand quartz watch from 10 years ago would sell at any more than a tiny fraction of that price. You can check chrono24 to verify this, and no preowned dealer would bother offering you a price to buy it off you. The cost to repair any quartz watch would probably be the same/more than the cost to replace them.

Sure there are some select watch models that collectors might regard as "investments" but those either have ridiculous waiting periods and restrictions, or they're vintage watches in pristine condition that are no longer in production. However, the vast majority of watches will depreciate.

Plenty of watches out there at this price range with decent or better finishing or interesting movements, including various seiko's, christopher ward, etc. Even some brands out of china like Seagull sell manual wind mechanical chronographs on aliexpress for cheaper.

  • Where's the Swatch X Omega sit?

    • As in the Moonswatches? They’re fun pieces to mix up a collection, but defs more on the Swatch side of quality vs Omega. What it borrows from Omega is the Speedmaster aesthetic. I would actually pick that over this Tissot tbh as I’d prefer to invest in a good/interesting chronos. Decent find from OP but just WAY too much competition at this price level for a Quartz Chrono.

  • Better than usual Japanese watches which are promoted every now and then by so called watch experts!

    • How is a basic, non-solar quartz with a 2 year warranty better than my Japanese solar quartz with a 5 year warranty?
      That cost much less btw.
