  • There are a few 'used' ones depending on the size from Amazon Warehouse which are cheaper.

    • +2

I got two of these from warehouse. Returned the first one since it was too big. Not much saving compared to this deal but still cheaper and I couldn't tell any flaws or imperfections. Perfect 👍

    • haven't ordered anything from there.
How can I open from Warehouse ?

      • +8

Once you select the size look below the price on the Amazon page and there will be a small link that says "other sellers on Amazon", or "save with used - like new" or similar.

The conditions (like new, acceptable, etc) are meaningless as is the description of the issue. On an item like this with so many used offers it will probably be something like they recieved a pallet where the boxes got crushed, and only the packaging is damaged. If there's only one used offer on an item, it's probably a return so the issue could be anything.

  • Has quality improved or worsend in the last 3-5 years? I used to buy nothing but Hush Puppies for my office job and found that they on average used to last me 6-9 month before they started to deteriorate and found myself buying another new pair.

    • +3

That would depend on level care and use on a per person basis.

I have had a pair for 9 months and done no conditioning on them they are absolutely fine

    • +1

I recently bought this very pair in the ad.

Quality of materials is pretty good. Quality of construction is average/poor.

It's just a glued sole. Shame this pair doesn't have a Goodyear welt or any other stitch.

    • +1

I called this out last time that even at this price is not worth it and people were mad:

    • they aren't high quality shoes the last ones I bought were in 2020 and I paid $32.15 , they are worth <$50

    This or the rmw's?

    • +9

      They need a mortgage

    • +12

My 2c is these types of 'chelsea' boot are a false economy. I put all of hush puppies, julius marlow, windsor smith etc in this category.

They generally cost $100-150 but only last 12-24 months. You could still wear them but they visually look tattered, the sole has worn away etc.

I purchased a pair of RMWs on sale for $450 in 2018. I have used and abused them, no re-soleing, conditioner, i've wiped them twice in their lifetime.

At the end of 2024, if i binned them today that's $75 a year. They will last many more years however, and look much better than these alternatives (personal opinion).

      • +6

        These are all good points.

I like Hush Puppies because I can rotate a pair once, maybe twice a week. And have different colours depending on my outfit, so they take a very long time to wear out and gives me a bit of variety in footwear.

In saying that I did recently splurge a bit on Blundstones as there was a nice colourway that took my fancy. A colour that RMW's didn't have otherwise would have got them. A colour most would find gross according to my partner lol with a yellow sole

        • Baby Kack yellow soles FTW ;-)

        • +1

I thought they were genuine work boots for a moment but then I saw the last photo and understand the true target market now.

      • +3

Bought a pair of Hush Puppies last year, and they lasted about 12 months. However, that was with me wearing them pretty much every single day for work, which is generally going to wear out pretty much any non-premium shoe. If I had spread that wear across two or three other pairs, they likely would've lasted significantly longer.

        • +2

To add to this, Hush Puppies have the only boots and shoes I've ever worn that needed no wearing in period whatsoever. Maximum comfort and pliability from day 1.

      • I agree with you.

Somehow I got lucky with a $50 clearance home brand pair I bought from the iconic.

Somehow 3 years later only issue is a chunk of sole fell off.

Though I replaced them with mongrel Chelsea boots and they seem a good compromise. ~$160 or so and full grain leather made in Australia. Not Goodyear welt or same as RMs but a lot better than these hush puppies etc.

        • Do mongrel have any shoes / boots that can go well with a business suit?

          • @bashar20: Yeah I got their riding boot, looks quite similar to RMs

      • +1

On the other hand, if you only wear shoes like this on special occasions, you won’t wear the expensive ones enough in your lifetime to ever make them worth it.

      • Did exactly the same. Bought the same brands you mentioned and would be lucky to get 6-9 months of wear, (Not a sedentary office worker) and they'd in reality be quite uncomfortable compared to the pair of RM's I got last year.
Chalk and cheese. Yes they cost a crapload more, but are so damn comfortable and last far longer than repeatedly paying $100~ bucks every few months for an inferior product.
Cost per wear, you'll come out in front with a quality pair of RM's or similar.

    • Honda civic vs M3?

  • +3

The inner sole on these squeaks when you walk. Not sure if it stops after some wear. Everyone can hear you walking by in a quiet office. Otherwise very comfortable.

    • Yep I have this problem too. I found bamboo socks alleviate it

  • These run a bit large had to return them last time.

  • +1

Get a pair of baxter. Last much longer and will cost less/year

  • +2

These are terrible. The heel is particleboard which swells and disintegrates if it even gets near a hint of water.

  • +1

    just get some RM's

    Lasts 6+ years
    Can be repaired.

Basically for the price of 1 of these per year (how long they tend to last) you'll get to wear RM's

    • One is super comfy, soft leather, and the other is rigid hard leather. Just get this; there is no need to look after it. Replace it with new when it is on sale. You can always have different colours and styles for the budget.

    • +1

RMs in their present manufacturing state are a false economy ..

I'm running two pairs, 12 and 10 years old respectively and they are just different shoes to what they are selling now.

I hugely regret encouraging people to buy RMs in recent years based on my experience with their older shoes. My girlfriend recently had the leather upper on hers tear (and she's a very gentle, light girl). She didn't even have them for two years, nor did she wear them daily and RMW staff didn't want to hear about any of it—this is what led me to have a look at their current offerings to begin with.

  • +2

I tried a Chelsea when I was younger. Very accommodating and supportive.

  • Missus bought me a pair last month, they look and feel fantastic. Need to season and condition them though (refer to reviews), but well worth the price.

  • +2

Tried to change to size 9.5 —> Got one in Mahogany colour, "sold by Amazon Commercial Services Pty Ltd" for $63.00.
    Bargain!

    • Nice - it didn’t work for me though 😅

  • I like these shoes, got them in some earlier sale and tried some sizes and return the ones which I didn’t think would suit me. I chose mahogany but it’s got tan and black available which is cool

  • I have a pair of these in the arsenal. Super comfy but scuff very very easily.

  • how are the sizing of these? I usually wear US 10. I have wide feet. Do i need to go up half a size? Or should be fine.

    • the reviews recommend going half a size down. i normally wear us 9.5 and bought size 9.5 and found it on the loose side with plenty of space for toes out of the box, would expect it to get even looser as i wear it in. In hind sight a size 9 would have been better. so i wouldn't go up half a size.

  • +1

Had these and they are terrible, tho to be fair Hush puppies/JM…etc leather shoes in AU are just trash for what you pay.

Leather is garbage, does not hold it's shape, soles are fairly soft so wears out very fast and leather scuffs up extremely easily. Due to the cheap leather they use don't expect to be able to polish/condition them up as it ends up looking worse. Expect to start feeling everything you step on after a few months of wear.

I would say they start looking terrible after a few months, can use them for 1-1.5 years before throwing them out. I would not buy another pair.

  • Buy 5 pairs of these or 1 pair of MR Williams. Like buying 1 Mercedes vs 5 VW Touregs.

    • You probably meant R.M. Williams. (Not MR Williams).
Never had shoes, but the shirt and leather belt were top notch.
And the service at their showroom is also great.
Maybe, I should get some shoes, but am a bit afraid that quality may have deteriorated.

      • +1

If it helps yes their quality has dipped pretty low the last couple of years however it's still miles better than aussie has on offer at the moment and their aftersales service makes up for the big drop in quality. I wouldn't touch them anywhere near their rrp tho.

If you're bothered to spend a bit of time getting yourself measured up at a premium boot/shoes store…etc maybe with a brannock device I suggest Allen Edmunds (they have 50-60% off sales very often), meermin is great, thursday boots is very decent for the price and have the biggest range of sizes (buy from amazon, get mutiple sizes and return) unless you have wide feet then you're going to need to get your foot measured up properly.

In general anything in Aussie outside of RMs shoes tend to last 1-2 years max. If you have a quality shoe and if take care of it can last 3-4 years before it needs to be resoled, if wearing in mainly an office setting I reckon 5 years+. Depending on how good the person is doing the resole you can your resole your shoes 3-5 times. Resoling in Aussie is ~50-100 aud.

  • How does one exchange via amazon?

I got a half size too big

    • Go to your order and click the return option, it will give you optuions on what is wrong with the item, you can send them back for free for wrong size, it might not give you an option to exchange but you will get a barcode to drop them at Auspost for free.

    • they get you to return and refund and then you repurchase in most cases
