Looking for Cooling Fans Based on Loudness/Db

So, I'm in the market for some cooling fans for the home and one thing that is a huge factor that gets overlooked in the specs section of the product is the loudness or how much noise the fan produces, which is a big deal.

So ideally, I if there is a way to sort through a general search, this would be a great feature.

Can anyone offer some assistance regarding this? Maybe some reasonably priced fans that are also quiet?

🙂

For the same airflow a bigger fan, or one spinning slower, will usually be quieter. Everything else involves believing marketing hype, which might or might not be true.

The quietest fan is no fan. Ie, generating less heat so no fan is required, or using natural convection.

I am a bit sensitive to noises from appliances. From my experiences, DC fans generated less noise when running. They often generate no noise on low settings. I like dc version of vornado circulator (i have both versions). I saw a DC version of pedestal fan at Costco (dont remember the brand), which interested me, but never actually tried at home. Their display model was quiet on lower settings.

  • DC is definitely quieter (and more efficient, and generally better) than AC, but it's more complicated and comes at a higher cost.

Things like bladeless fans and the deeper vornado fans do work as well, basically using depth instead of width to move more air. Tend to be pricier though, I'd be looking at installing proper aircon rather than buying one of those dyson fans.

That's about the only marketing hype I'd buy into. But also depends where you are, I swear everywhere in Australia is getting more humid these days, can't really live without reverse cycle aircon anymore.

  • Thanks for the replies guys, much appreciated.

As a side note - I was turned into a believer in ceiling-mounted fans recently. Couldn’t believe how quiet and effective they are. But of an eyesore though.

    Merry Christmas y’all!

    • They are good for high ceilings, but too low for my liking on standard 2.4m ceilings.

Try a vortex style fan or one with big blades. We got a Woozoo unit for the bedroom and it’s quite good.
