Swear by the expert model as an IT guy. Nothing better.

That being said, my rocker switch has become faulty after 6 years. Still works but I need to press it harder than I used to to get it to register.

      • +11

It's a two way mechanical switch that needs to be held down to use. It will always fail at some point. I'd say maybe a design flaw, but I don't think it's planned.

          • +15

            @dingbated:

Ahh a design flaw, yup those switches are so new and groundbreaking, who knew they could fail. Absolutely no alternative method could be used without inconveniencing the user.

What are you trying to say? A mechanical switch wearing out after 6 years is "planned obsolescence"?

      Nothing better.

You have not used a datavac

      • +5

I have not, you're right. Nothing better that I've used. Haha.

I'm looking for something like this. What would make the DataVac better?

        • Has anyone used both?

          • +2

@Vialz: I have had the DataVac for about 8 years, cleaned hundreds of computers in that time.
But haven't used both. Looking spec wise they should "blow" roughly as well, being 500W motors (550W for the Xpert).

The DataVac is almost certainly built better, it does cost more at RRP and has an all-metal build with a very solid plastic handle. I've dropped it before…no worries. Made in USA, so hopefully good QC too? Although the CompuCleaner has a low return rate on Amazon.
The DataVac also doesn't require you to hold down a button, one press switches it on and off. It WILL blow itself off a table so you can't sit it down whilst it's on. But I'd imagine this is more comfortable and lets you use it for longer without straining to hold a button down and keep your hand in the same place.

Honestly pretty impressed with the price of the Xpert and considering buying one as a spare or to use at work, even if it's not quite as durable as the DataVac long term.

              @Zenskas:

              a very solid plastic handle.

That unfortunately though is the Achilles' heel of the datavac. Although replacement handles can be ordered, the shipping is prohibitively expensive. Would love someone to make a .stl of the handle. Mine is currently superglued together thanks to the cat knocking it off the table.

              • @Bruceflix: Fair point, I thought it might be the only thing that can really break on the whole thing, other than any nozzles you attach.

The fact it was bolted on and could be replaced is good, shame about replacement cost. For sure a custom printed or otherwise fabricated handle would be boss.

            • @Zenskas: Thanks!

    • Do you know if the switch is soldered onto a main board? If it's just connected by wires it should be simple to replace that switch with any other 3 position switch.

Have the original, only occasional use, it's very good.

  • Is there a cheap copy of this that’s useable?
I don’t think I’d get $70 worth out of it.

    • I looked but all the cheaper ones try to sell you on battery powered, which makes them much weaker.

I didn't check AliExpress tho, maybe something there?

  • Has anyone tried one of these vs something like the wolfbox deal from the other day? https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/885537

    • +3

I have a DataVac but don't need all-day usage so I bought the Wolfbox. Just like cordless vacuum cleaners, I feel having a cordless blower will be a lot more convenient so I'll probably use it more.

This deal really does blow. figuratively, I mean.

Thanks OP, could never quite justify a datavac but picked up the xpert

  • UK plug?

    • From Amazon:
      550 Watt, UK Plug CompuCleaner

Reviews of the base one says comes with a AU plug though

    • +1

      I wondered the same thing.
This YouTube review of the Australian Xpert, from the same Amazon link as above, does show an Australian plug at the 1.59 mark.

Keep using my Ozito blower or this? lol

  • Doesn't rate how strong the wind is but corded should do better than battery one. But my battery garden blower is pretty ok too. Not sure if I need to spend another $72 on this. The discount % is not very attractive to me.

  • +1

I think I bought one at similar price about 2 years ago. Still using it quite a lot. Love it ^^

Thanks OP, I was looking at this only a couple of days ago, so good timing. Ordered the Xpert as it comes with brushes as well as the dual power mode,

  • I like this for inflating stuff and cleaning computer stuff

    https://www.bunnings.com.au/ozito-pxc-18v-cordless-high-volu…

    • Good to know. Do you need to keep pressing the button to pump the bed? If so that's not good tho. But happy to add to my ozito collection when on sale.

  • Because I'm tight I'm using a basic paint bushes and my wife's hairdryer on the no-heat setting. The paint brushes dislodge the dust, and the hairdryer just blows it somewhere else (usually done outside).

If I need more speed and volume I use the battery garden blower which blows the crap of everything.

Works heaps better than those air cans I was buying by the box.

    • Works heaps better than those air cans I was buying by the box.

Hmm, why were you buying air cans by the box when you have a battery garden blower already?

      • +4

I got fed up with the canned air after I destroyed a very expensive tape drive and nearly started a fire. Don't clean equipment in the kitchen while boiling potatoes on a gas stove. The fireball was big, went up the rangehood and the tape drive was burning from the inside…I went flying. I remember looking at the gas flame thinking "oh, the flame is red it's usually blu…."…BOOM!!!!

In the end I looked for safer alternatives, and came up with the paint brushes and the blower.

        • Whoah !!!! Glad you're ok - sounds pretty scary!
