Best deal on a new TV

Mate's TV just crapped itself. He kinda wants to get a new TV ASAP, but is there likely to be some AMAZING deals on boxing day sales or is it all just hype?

I've been looking on JB HiFi and Dick Smith, but I need some brand advice. I've heard Sony and Samsung are the way to go in terms of quality?
And then there's Panasonic, LG, Philips, Toshiba, Sharp and the dodgy home brands like Soniq, Sanyo and Dick Smith. Is that in the right order? if not, what's the order in terms of reliability from best to worst?

I'm looking for the best 42-46" LED TV under $1000. It needs to be able to play movies off a portable 2.5" external usb hard drive. This is important. Do all the modern TV's do this now? Or is it still a bit touch and go? Also needs to be able to play Xvid .avi and x264 .mp4 coz most of the stuff around these days is coming out as x264.

I'm not fussed on 3D, or any of the other gimmicks.

What can you recommend?

    someone posted it today(?)

  • Just get a WDTV live, and open more options up.

My parents were looking for a new tv. The Sony models on DSE and appliance.online didnt match however. Possibly older models at DSE.

    • I got a WDTV Live for myself, they're great :) but my mate wants the TV to be a simple, all in one affair, without the extra devices, cables and remote controls :P

  • Few mates in our group chipped in to buy the below TV for a friend as his wedding gift. I think its pretty good value to what it is.

  • If your looking for quality, I suggest buying ones where they are 'assembled' in Japan. So obviously only jap brands would have them eg. panasonic & sony.

  • the new LG's are nice , similar priced to samsung but the 3d in them u get more glasses including gaming ones (where split screen games u put your glasses on and see just your view)

can play all mp4's and the new stuff.

plus u get $500 worth of movie tickets.

    • Ooh that one looks nice, though my mate isn't much of a gamer, so those extra features probably would go unused. But I love the looks of those shiny stands on the LG and Samsung Smart TVs

  • This is the best deal you'll get! 46" smart tv from Kogan for $599, deal only lasts till Sunday midnight. https://m.kogan.com/au/buy/46-agora-smart-led-tv-full-hd-usb…

If you don't like this one, come into Aldi an ill keep u one on hold for u lol

    • I was looking at that one but what turns me off is how hard it will be to get it looked at if something goes wrong during the warranty period. If I buy from dick smith or JB i can just take it back. But kogan i imagine I'd have to ship it back, which could be costly. I'd prefer to get a more reliable brand too like samsung or sony. But I might be pushing the budget :P

And I live in WA, so no ALDI :(
