I have one, I like it. Using it to play with how carbonated my homemade sparkling water is. It does 0.5g increments when measuring 1kg.
I can already tell that the finish on the plate is going to mark easily, but I don't mind.

    • +1

I've done the same. But need better for flat/charged batteries.

    • +3

What is homemade sparkling water? I have a 20kg food grade Carbon Dioxide tank linked to a soda stream which I use. Does it get more homemade than that?

      • +1

Yeah, that basically, but I ditched the Sodastream because I hate the press-seal on them. I use Carb Caps from Kegland. Your setup sounds nicer than mine, my tank only holds 6kg of CO2.
Even fancier would be a carbstone in a keg, in a fridge, tapped to mains, the bloke from Kegland says he has that setup at his house.

        • +1

Oh there's nothing nice or fancy about my setup, the 20kg is basically a scuba tank sitting there. Certainly very economical though :D

The sodastream is not the best, but it's easy. Kegland guy's set up sounds mint.

  • +5

Are they really so accurate that it's worth getting the .02 gram over the .05 gram?

    • +1

      Good point.

    • +5

They are precise, or necessarily accurate..

The ones I got are surprisingly repeatable too and the accuracy was within spec for a known 1g weight I had.

    • -1

I use these (or ones that look like this) to measure yeast for my pizza dough and I need the accuracy.

Probably won't matter if I'm 0.01g off but sometimes my entire batch only uses 0.02-0.03g
g if I'm doing a long ferment in hot weather.

Saying that, if you have to ask, you don't need that level of accuracy and 0.05 should be plenty for most use cases.

      • -2

I use these (or ones that look like this) to measure yeast for my pizza dough and I need the accuracy.

Lol - yeast is the one ingredient you don't need the accuracy for. Just leave it for a bit shorter/longer because the yeast grows.

You're more likely to need the accuracy for sugar/salt/oil in pizza tough.

        • +6

          What about if I don't have shorter/longer?

I can just tell my customers to wait a couple hours or come earlier next time, I suppose.

I might even rebrand myself to "pizza when I'm ready fangulo"

          • -8

            @butter:

            What about if I don't have shorter/longer?

Here's one more tip - just get out of the pizza business because you obviously have no clue.

          • +3

            @butter:

I can just tell my customers to wait a couple hours or come earlier next time, I suppose.

Doesn't make much sense. You have already acknowledged temperature impacts dough time. You can't control when customers order pizza. So refrigeration is important for most pizza shops.

          • +1

@butter: I like it. Creates that scarcity that people crave.

      • sometimes my entire batch only uses 0.02-0.03g
g if I'm doing a long ferment in hot weather.

What size batch of dough are you making for customers that requires 0.02g yeast?

        • 10 gram pizzas.

        • What size batch of dough are you making for customers that requires 0.02g yeast?

he has funky sh*t on his hands to save a few bucks in yeast.

Accuracy in your adrenochrome harvest records is paramount.

    • +9

I bought the 2kg/0.05g recently and tested it using a calibration set.

      • 10g >>> 10.00
      • 50g >>> 50.05 (± 0.1%)
      • 100g >>> 100.15 (± 0.15%)
      • 500g >>> 500.5 (± 0.1%)
      • 800g >>> 801.0 (± 0.125%)

Way under 1% error, considered very adequate for its intended purpose.

What's suprising is that it comes with a measuring tape, handy to have.

      • Sold me, thanks for the efforts.

      • Yeah. Mine came with a measuring tape and I’m just a little confused as to why…

    • haven’t had arguments about short changing at drug deals due to accuracy, but then customers usually don’t bring their own scales.

    • I have the 0.1g accuracy model I use for my daily coffee needs and works really well. Been using daily for about 1-2 years without any dramas.

  • which is the most usable say for tea or coffee?

    • +1

Depends how heavy your cups are.
Could your cup + water + ingredients weigh more than 1kg? If so, get the 2kg, if not, get the 1kg.
If you don't want to be that precise, get the large 3kg (I got this one)

    • Most in the espresso / pourover community aim for accuracy to 0.1g, so anything more than that might not be hugely important - i'm also not sure how accurately the 0.0x measurements would be on a cheap scale like this. Maybe just go the 3kg for flexibility if you want to weigh heavier kitchen items.

    • say for tea or coffee?

I'm gonna use that line the next time the cops ask me why I have a high precision scale.

I use mine for drugs and it's brilliant because I can short change the customers without them realizing.

Good way to weigh up all the snow that will be falling over the Christmas break. Not enough to do snow angels though unfortunately.

  • +2

Will come in handy to measure them herbs and spices

    • +12

      Sure sure, "herbs" and "spices"

      • +3

saffron is more expensive than coke lol

  • +4

I got one of the 1kg units for measuring coffee. I've had it for about a year and never replaced the batteries. Good little unit, no issues

  • Bought and returned one of these already because it was inaccurate and the reading would drift continually upwards

  • I've had the 3kg version for years. works great!

    • You must smoke a lot of weed 😮

  • What’s the rrp on these?

    • +2

The camelcamelcamel price history is more relevant. They have had a couple of price drops from $15.50

    • +1

Honestly, how does RRP mean a single thing?? Street price is the only real measure

      • +1

Street price for the scales or what you’re measuring on the scales?

        • +1

$200 to $400 per gram depending on “accuracy”.

    • Around 20-55 bucks. The 1kg/0.02g one that went for about $11 in this sale has counterparts selling for about $55.

  • Was disappointed bought one last time from the last thread used the ebay link was provided in the comments and it was DOA it would power up but not register weight, seller wanted to give me half the money back , I refused and said would leave bad feedback and refunded full amount. I think i prefer to walk in to a store for these..My kmart $10 scale may not be as accurate at least it works

    • +5

If it's not accurate, then it doesn't work IMO.

      • May not be as accurate as these claims to be have compared to another scale and got same reading so accurate enough….. You are asking me to trust that everyone of these shipped will give the same reading? I hardly think so. To me the plastic was flimsy where as my kmart scale definite built better.

        • I wouldn't trust every single item from any manufacturer, ever. Moot point.

    • +1

think i prefer to walk in to a store for these

This Amazon is shitting all all eBay. eBay is full of sellers who (profanity) you around when things go wrong. Amazon will take returns without question.

  • +1

There’s a few of these floating around that all look the same. I bought this one a few years ago and it takes seconds to update, which can be frustrating / unusable for some thing (espresso). The one that it replaced updated instantly.

  • +1

I do not recommend these at all. Ive left a review on amazon. In a nut shell, it lasted 4months, till the buttons gave way and wobbled around under the panel. Since amazon said the was only x amount of weeks - it got tossed in the bin.

  • These look like generics, which isn't a problem in my experience. I've been using an identical looking one for two and a half years now.

Ordered a slightly larger 3kg one for pots.

They compare favourable to Ali pricing.

    Thanks OP.

  • +1

Had one for years. They do the job.

    • +1

Mine's had plenty of accidental bumps & bruises. Even fell in a full sunk. Ripped it out as fast as possible, pulled the batteries out, and let it dry for several days. Never missed a beat.

Checked my Amazon history… It was this same listing, 2kg model. I'm gonna grab the 1kg model, compare

  • +2

I bought one of these. We also got a larger Kmart one and found it a lot better.

  • Great time to bring the Pokemon card addition to my mates' kids lmao

  • I got one of this and it went badly after only use it a few times, the measurements keep jumping up and down by multiple grams and make it useless to make small measurements. Already binned.

  • I have the 0.01 / 500g version that looks like it's made by the same manufacturer in China.

    25% off at the moment

Whatever unit you get, if accuracy is important then I recommend getting some calibration weights and re-calibrating every once in a while so the measurements don't drift. The weights I use are these, but they have a horrible chemical coating that smells toxic, so I only handle them with the tweezers that come with the package. There's probably a better alternative for calibration weights

Good idea. Especially after the negative energy pen that Amazon AU were selling turned out to the radioactive. To their credit, the product worked a little too well.
