Can I Get out of Dealer Add-Ons after Saying Yes?

Hey team, I bought a car yesterday and am very happy with the purchase. After, signing the initial contract, another rep came and tried selling me the dashboard camera ($1395) and tinting ($500).

I thought about it for a day and then emailed yes today as family members were saying this is a great price. I just got home now and after 5 minutes of googling I can see the dashcam install is very pricey for what I am getting. Feeling like such an idiot because I didn’t even try negotiating.

Can I get out of this?

  • how much was the deposit?

    • $500 for the car, which I still definitely want. Just want to get out of the add-ons.

You should be fine if you already signed the initial contract

        • Cheers mate. I’ll go in-person tomorrow to try sort it out, at least negotiate.

          • @KevinBradey: If you need an excuse, just say the dash cam doesn’t meet your requirements.

            • want it to record when parked
            • facing interior for uber
            • 5g connection
            • voice control
            • app support

I highly doubt it can do all of these

@askbargain: Imagine the comedy as he goes through this list one by one, with the assistant strangely an expert in dash cams and goes through in great detail on how it ticks all the boxes.

@askbargain: Don’t say the Uber one. That’ll impact your warranty.

            • @askbargain: Is it possible to get aftermarket camera setup similar to the tesla on the side?

Call them back to cancel it. If they ask why just tell them you don't have the money. They won't install it if they think you can't pay.

  • Cheers guys. I’ll ask them tomorrow in person.

Unless theyve literally installed these in the hkurs since you left, you should be able to cancel them.

    No

It will probably be a fairly average camera so maybe $1000 markup. Window tinting you could shop around to get cheaper but not by that much. Just cancel the dashcam.

This, $500 for tinting probably is pretty good. Tint A Car is pretty much the same (depending on what Tint you go for). I know my local Ford/Hyundai/Honda dealer send their cars to the local Tint A Car for all their tinting.

Was at Tint A Car and Mazda sends it there too.

    • Thanks mate, that’s what I did. I read the info on the tinting and it’s a “ceramic tint”. Reading online, that seems to be reputable. I’m no expert though.

Dealers read the forum section so they know you will cancel today. Tell ‘em ozbargain made you cancel

    What was the outcome?

    • I'm guessing we will never know.

I went into the dealer yesterday and politely asked for them to remove the dashboard camera add-on. Unexpectedly, it was quite easy and they did not kick up any fuss.

  • i can't believe they did offer you underbody rust protection

    • Even I didn't fall for that! Although winter is coming…
