AmEx Travel Credit - Anyone Booked Multiple Nights, Then Cancelled a Night Later for a Partial Refund?

Got a $200 Amex Travel Credit. Just went to make a hotel booking for $199.75.

But it wont let me book, as it's saying it needs to be $200+ booking.

This is new. You used to just forfeit anything under $200 not used in the one booking (ie. I've booked $160 flights previously, lost the $40).

So wondering what happens if I book an extra night (which is fully refundable), then call up and cancel one night.

Would they cancel the full booking, and rebook one night (which means I will lose the entire credit, as credits arent refundable), or just cancel one night, and keep the existing night?

      It is now.

Amex used to have an amazing customer service (being US based you could call them after hours). Now just like the rest. So can't call till Monday.
      Credit expires tonight.
Had this booking as my backup in case I couldn't find anything else.

But they changed the rules…so caught me off guard.

  • The change happened more than a year ago so I am surprised you did not know about it. You would have received an email about it: https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/761006 & https://www.australianfrequentflyer.com.au/community/threads…

There is no refund on travel credits. If you cancel a refundable booking, you will only get the amount you pay in excess of the credits back. So for a $300 booking with $200 travel credit, you would only get $100 back.

    • Cheers. I ended up booking 2 nights (full refundable) and will cancel one night. So a $399.50 booking. Guessing I will get $199.50 back.
