JB HiFi have it for $20 at $239, available now, with no surcharge.

Mind, given the size, it really needs to be cheaper still.

If you have access to JB Solutions, $219.55

  • Was tempted to get one of these, but then realised I'd only really use it for books with text, so I'd only benefit from seeing a colour book cover :D

I thought it would be good for PDFs, but at this size, apparently not

    • Someone else mentioned in another post that the resolution for colour is less than B&W, but gen 4 panels might fix this

      • I know the contrast is worse, not sure about resolution

    • I was thinking the same but it turns out to be useful when my kids use it (instead of giving up my phone).
So many of their books are in colors (Dog man, etc).

  • This or Kindle Paperwhite 12th Gen 7” Signature Edition 32GB and whats the difference between signature edition kindle and the 16gb one?

sorry for the noob question, gift for my fiancee

    • The Kobo natively supports Libby/Overdrive, so is the vastly better alternative for those looking to borrow books from the library.

The Amazon store is however preferable if you predominantly buy your books that way. Obv if you want to subscribe to Kindle unlimited then you will prefer the kindle.

Having said that, the colour screen on this is a novelty unless you are wanting to read colour manga, and even then, its not ideal.

A more direct comparison would be to the Clara BW.

      • thanks for your reply @cannedhams

I can get the 12 gen kindle signatured edition for $255 and the kobo clara colour for $205.

I think the kindle is worth the extra 50$?

        • What is she going to read? If she borrows books from the library, then get the Kobo. If she already has a bunch of books in the Amazon ecosystem, then get the Kindle. If she reads manga, in colour, then the Kobo.

If you arare going to get epubs etc off project gutenberg etc and use calibre then it wont make an enormous difference either way.
Likewise if you're not wedded to either ecosystem - no major difference buying books either way.

          Side by side here:- https://www.reddit.com/r/kobo/comments/1cg0wnu/yet_another_k…

I wouldnt obsess about it too much. I use a Kobo Sage mainly for the larger screen, but it wouldnt bother me to use a Kindle paperwhite.

        • I have 2 Kindle Paperwhites of different generations and a Kobo Clara. I've moved over to using the Kobo almost exclusively due to the library access. I'm able to borrow a limited range of books directly on the Kobo itself using 'Overdrive'. Other books need to be downloaded onto your computer from https://libbyapp.com and then loaded onto the Kobo via USB using the program 'Adobe Digital Editions'. If it's not available on Libby, I borrow a print book from the library. You can also request that your library add ebooks to their library.
The equivalent of Kindle Unlimited on Kobo is Kobo Plus. I'm not sure how they compare though.

  • Do kobo still allow importing your own ebooks in EPUB or PDF? Last time I used a Kobo reader was back in 2016… Thank you in advance.

Yes, just connect to pc with usb and copy paste the file into kobo.

There's a website called send.djazz.se, which allows you to wirelessly import your epubs. It converts them to kepub which is Kobo's proprietary format which has faster page turns and some other minor improvements specific to kobo.

I think the website also supports pdf.

      Short answer is yes.

Long answer is that epub support is not great for books with a lot of formatting. You would be better off converting it to kobo's native format (kepub). You can do that in calibre.

PDF support is actually decent. You can zoom into crop margins and it will retain that preference for subsequent pages. That makes pdfs readable, if not ideal. Not sure whether the kindle has the same feature.

  • Thanks OP.

Had an eye on this and pulling the trigger as I just got JB to price-match this.

They even price matched the sleep cover case (down from $44 to $35.96) too.
