Nord Causing Connectivity Problems on Windows 11 PC

Hey guys

I hopped on the ozbargain bandwagon this week and got myself a Nord VPN subscription.

Sometimes it works fine, however, increasingly it is causing me connectivity issues.

When it acts up it says on chrome 'This site can’t be reached
www.google.com’s server IP address could not be found'.

So i then i installed and tried firefox. (Hmm. We’re having trouble finding that site.)

i disabled the kill switch, still does it regularly.

When i just hit pause on Nord or turn it off everything works fine again.

Can anyone who is more tech savvy than me give me some insight on what might be the problem here?

Cheers

It's definitely the connection between the seat and the keyboard.

      Not denying the possibility lol

  • Sounds like some sort of DNS resolution error when using the VPN. Have you tried multiple locations?

    • When its acting up changing to different locations doesn't help. Sometimes when it comes off pause it works fine again. But generally i just turn it off and when i reactivate it later on it works flawless for a few hours then does it again.

      • Okay. Have you got just a basic internet connection and router? Could possibly be firewall configuration somewhere (like the router) blocking VPN ports. I could be completely wrong, but these are things I would be checking if I was experiencing issues.

        • yes its just a basic 50/20 Leaptel connection, TPlink vx220 and an ethernet cord. Guess i'll chase it up with either tplink or the Nord help desk. Or even Leaptel might help, even though its technically not their problem.

          • @Shane043: TP Link directly probably won't help, but log in and check any firewall settings.

Leaptel could provide some insight. Have you tried another internet connection to rule it out? Even hot-spotting off your phone?

Do you have any custom DNS set on your machine as well? I would suggest checking that to confirm all is default.

  • I have the same issue. As you do, I simply turn off Nord and then internet browser works.

I have Nord on several machines and the issue only exists for Win11. My other Win10 machines operate fine.

    • Interesting. I might have to look into going back to 10 if thats a common cause.

    From Nord Tech Support:

Please try switching the connection protocol to TCP. It can be changed in the NordVPN application settings.

Within the Windows NordVPN application: navigate to Settings and click on the 'Connection' tab > locate the 'VPN protocol' option > select OpenVPN (TCP).

    Fingers crossed….

  • Either change the VPN protocol in the Settings or maybe change the DNS to one of these:

I think you should try the other VPN protocol first.

    Hey mate,

Sounds like Nord is giving you issues.

    Hope that helps.

  • What are your intents/purposes on using VPN ???

IMO - alot of hype / marketing spiel / around VPN's … and many "general" users shouldn't need to use one in daily use.
as you discovered - it can cause more drama, than positives.

you already said you aren't tech savvy.
    just curious.

Personally, only time I used a VPN - was when needed to use the IP address of my VPS server … for some backend stuff into US +++ have US presence.
But daily == NO … more hype/marketing than anything else.

    • I think many people use VPN to access certain websites and/or video streaming (geoblocking), maybe also for work. News websites usually advise people to use VPN in situation when using public WiFi for example (for security reason).

Another good reason is this ;-)
