My Motorola G84 Has Constant Crashing Using Android Auto

Is anyone else having an absolute nightmare with their G84 over wireless Android Auto?

My previous Sony 10V worked just fine with the exact same wireless AA headunits (3 different ones). It would work for 8 hours continuously no problem. But this G84 constantly randomly restarts the AA connection, mostly during navigation, on all 3 headunits I use.

It happens repeatedly and 100% guaranteed it will occur within anything from 1 second, to 30 minutes of establishing the wireless AA connection.

It seems that once it has happened that first time (1s..30m), it happens again very quickly the 2nd and subsequent times, until the AA fails to recover and just stays in BT-only mode. This total failure happens usually after about 4 automatic re-connects.

The phone and apps are all bang up to date, and I think this all started happening after a google maps/AA update. I have them set to auto-update. It seemed to happen after the update, AND after I connected to another one of my headunits, rather than just my main one. But now that it is happening, I can't get it to un-happen. I have tried resetting caches and re-installing both Maps and AA and only connecting to my main HU to no avail.

I have noticed even using just google maps navigation standalone without AA, the maps app also restarts randomly, just not as much.

I have also tried using Waze for nav, and AA still crashes randomly using Waze. AA also crashes just sitting there idle and not navigating.

I'm at my wits end. This G84 phone was bought because Telstra blocked my perfectly fine Sony 10V. Now this G84 is basically unusable for my use-case.

I'm wondering if anyone else is suffering from this, or if its just me?

Just give Motorola AU support a call. Number is on the website - they're really good (or were in my case). They'll probably make you soft-reset the phone and update the system software via Motorola update first. And I guess the same for Android Auto.

If it's falling over with wireless, could there be something else in the car that's also speaking on 2.4GHz or 5GHz?

    • Thanks for the info it really helps.

The Google Maps nav app crashes in a similar way when used standalone, just not as often. So its not just an AA issue, and AA seems to be closely intertwined with Maps, so it's probably Maps thats causing it.

If I had to guess it seems like a RAM memory issue. Like a certain part of the RAM is bad like one of the higher address lines. So when using Maps/Nav/AA it eventually reaches that bad memory address and crashes the app.

I have had a heap of Motorola "G" series phones as backups for family members … the problem is they all have overheating issues to varying degrees :/

Some have been taken back to place of purchase, sent off for warranty repair, all come back saying they have been "serviced, tested and working fine", but they are behaving exactly the same as they were before being sent off!

    • Yeah I initially thought it could be a heat issue. But the phone isn't getting hot when this happens. I have even had it right over the vent blowing ice cold air over it to the point its cold to touch, but to no avail.

  • Shouldve stuck with Sony Xperia even if it means going Voda or Optus.

It may be related, but in my Mazda my old phone and AA would work fine. Got a new phone and had constant AA dropouts.
I can use my old phone with AA fine, but new phones (including new Iphone and Carplay) have dropouts.
Lots of experimenting and trying different phones, the end result it looks like some USB AA ports in cars don't provide enough power for newer phones.
I got a wireless AA/Carplay adaptor and the dropouts don't happen anymore.
Just FYI, Mazda say their USB is within design so it's not a fault.

    • Yep, AA (and carplay, to a lesser extent) is janky software copy pasted together by the cheapest 457 visa holders for each car model.
I have a brand new Toyota, AA has underwhelmed me. Ironically, this tech piece is half the reason that people upgrade cars these days.

I use mine with a wireless adaptor. Sometimes takes a little while to connect but otherwise works fine.

I've had a mixed bag with my G84 and Android Auto.

For wired connections, I always have to unlock it first before it connects (this seems to be a Moto thing as prior I had a G31 that behaved the same way, even with Android Auto set to "connect automatically when phone locked"). Wired connection was always good in various Mitsubishis without any dramas. My to and from work '07 Corolla is running a '24 LC70 factory head unit that occasionally drops its lunch while Android Auto is running. It has a message popping up on the Toyota head unit's screen saying "lost connection with G84" or something like that. I just quickly unplug/plug back in and then all good.

For wireless connections, I have it paired with a '24 Corolla Cross Atmos. I don't have to unlock my G84 but it's 50/50 with the auto connection. When it doesn't connect, I have to jump into the CCs' settings screen, devices, choose the G84 and toggle the "use Android Auto with this device" to get it to connect. I've tried doing a full reset on the CC's multimedia screen, but to no avail.

I've considered doing a factory reset on the G84 to see if it clears up these couple of little quirks. I've just lived with it for the time being.

Thanks. But once yours does finally connect wirelessly is it reasonably stable then?

Yep, never drops in the CC once connected.

  • UPDATE: I don't want to speak too soon, but I think it might be fixed.

I realised I hadn't uninstalled/reinstalled both Maps and AA at the same time. I'm pretty sure I had only done one or the other at a time.

So uninstalling both apps, then reinstalling both apps clean seems to have gotten it to work ok again.

Did a 6 hour trip and it only crashed once, which is fairly normal with this particular AliExpress Android/AA head unit. Previously it was crashing within minutes.

It also seems to work with both of my ATOTO AA screens in my other cars, but I rarely do more than one hour trips in those. But again those were crashing within minutes previously.

Fingers crossed. And I also disabled automatic updates for Maps and AA, as that is what caused all this bollox in the first place.
