Selling 90's Sports Cards - Easiest Bulk Sale Method?

Hi, alas I am pretty sure I am dying, won't make 12 months. Am selling off stuff to lessen the burden on my wife. One of these being my 90's infatuation with sports cards mainly NBA but some much lesser value MLB and also a few decent NFL.

I am not looking at it as gold bullion and know the industry changed to very insert focused. But still I partially valued it several years back and it was just for the main cards, in the $USD3500 mark.

I do not have the time to sell piecemeal, I just want to sell as a lot, with the buyer getting a very hefty discount commensurate with the situation.

Not sure where to go? Should I just list on Gumtree, FB and here or any channel for such things?

Thanks in advance - pls also if we can stay on the cards only the health stuff is an aside, I'd rather not get into but alas is very legit.

Thank you in advance for your guidance.

EDIT: THANK YOU - I will split into a few lots and flog on Ebay or FB marketplace, the grading places are more for the high end insert cards now, and while I see the upside will not make the sale of themselves. Cheers again for the replies, are appreciated. :-)

Why even mention your health in this post if you don't want to discuss it?

If it's legit - all the best.

Just sell as a bulk lot on eBay for a wider audience and absorb the associated fees.

I suppose it heads off advice to HODL for just a few more years, or to take the time to carefully list each one.

    • Point taken, it just seemed relevant……finding out you'll possibly be dead in a few months is a tad all consuming.

I meant no offence, alas is 'legit'.

I just didn't want to have to explain the conditin, which is a tad exhausting to do & thank folks for kind words..

ebay has fees, but also the broadest audience and will enable you to get the best price. However, selling as as lot will significantly reduce the amount you will take in.

May be better to take the top 5% in value cards, and sell those separately, or sell in multiple smaller lots.

I did some spring cleaning recently and was wondering the same thing. I have some NBA, NBL, baseball, Jurassic Park cards and a whole bunch of stamps I inherited. Where did you get yours valued? I've heard of FB groups etc but I've also heard they get really angry if you join just wanting a valuation! I was thinking maybe just list as $0.99 auctions on eBay and see what happens.

If you find stores (retail/online) you can contact them directly to ask if they'll do a bulk purchase from you.
Also be sure to have photos of the collection/singles too.

Id imagine stores will offer a max of 50% of value, and theyll play with you saying it isnt worth anything to start with. They need to turn a profit and if they are at all greedy could offer as little as 10% the value.

Yeah I wouldnt be expecting big money from them but at least its an easier or faster way of selling.

How good was the smell of a freshly opened NBA pack of cards from the 90's? I always wanted to buy a full box but it was out of my price range.

I'd start with gumtree/facebook, cash on pickup. Ebay would have a better reach, particularly if you are in Coffs, but you don't have any protections if the buyer claims they received a packet of Woolworths collectables.

Maybe contact the card grading companies, there is at least 4 that come up on a quick search.

Having your top cards graded probably opens up your market and would help get a higher amount for those key cards.

They may also be able to either buy the rest as a bulk lot, or put you in touch with someone who would.

There are also card traders around in the major cities. Some give indicative what they will pay e.g. "65% comps (based on average over last 5 sales of exact card)". This would allow you to offload with the least hassle, although leaving a decent amount of money on the table.

Otherwise eBay is likely your best bet.

Bit like a used car, go to a dealer and you won't get top dollar but trying to sell it privately means you're using time/energy/effort.

Sell the expensive cards individually, then the cheap-ish in a single lot.

    Good luck.

Depending on what you have, could get some bites from Reddit

Wouldn't bother with gumtree. I'm pretty sure there are no legit people on there anymore, only scammers.

Facebook marketplace you might reach someone who wants it. Can't hurt.

Probably likely going to need to take an extreme hit on the value if you want to sell quickly. I wouldn't mention your health, because people will use that to lowball you.

  • Any Dwyane Wade cards? Or any obscure Aussie players?

Happy to or hear any of some of the higher end cards

    • No mate, pretty much all yanks - am sure I've got plenty of Luc Longleys in my commons and an Andrew Gaze, Shane Heal or two.
