  • for a go pro thats pretty cheap.

I've been using a DJI Action 4, its battery life alone is enough reason to buy it over GoPro.
Then comes the amazing image quality, non overpriced accessories like GoPro, etc.

I don't wanna be that guy but I don't think GoPro is as worth as it used to be.

You can buy the DJI Action 4 standard combo for $348 down from $469 at Amazon AU right now.

    • +1

Agreed, gopro is not as popular many years ago, DJI or 360 is better option IMHO.

    • how long does the dji last for?

      • +6

I have it attached on my motorcycle helmet set with:

        • 2.7k
        • 50fps
        • Manual ISO, white balance, etc

The battery last easily a little past 1h, I can go for short rides over and over with the same battery, it is insane how little battery it uses taking my video setting into consideration.
If you are happy with 1080p you will be laughing to how long its battery last.
I bought the adventure combo that comes with 3x batteries and the USB-c charger.

I had the 5 Hero Black and got hit by a drunk driver while going back home from work waiting at the red traffic light, well, the GoPro as usual had no battery left so I got a 50/50 fault, it sucks.

Again, I don't wanna be that guy or attack OP, I personally think GoPro is not worth both from battery and accessories prices pov.

        • thanks for the info, i usually go for a 2-3hr surf, thinking if there are something that can last that long

        • What did you use to mount the dji? looking to do the same with my helmet.

          • +1

@Bojack420: Just a regular GoPro curved mount, not the flat one, although my combo package comes with one.
I didn't wanna remove it for no reason so mounting accessories you have will fit just fine.
I have it mounted at the very top of my helmet, up to 80km/h it is not even there, past that you notice the wind resistance but I hardly ever do that so whatever. I prefer the wider video at that position over attached close to your mouth.

The other two accessories I judge a must:

EDIT: I also have filters and that metal cage support them. Some case including the original one won't fit glass screen protector and might not support filters.

        • Comparing a hero 5 to a modern DJI isn't really fair. That performance sounds basically identical to my hero 9 filming at 2.7k60. Battery life is supposedly better on the newer models like the 12 & 13 too.

I'll give you the accessories are expensive, but apart from the battery there's non-GoPro options for most things which can be considerably cheaper.

@indented: Before buying mine, I watched a ton of video as I usually do before buying any tech device.
New GoPro also have new features meaning more battery usage, sure, it might have improved but aren't much better.

Again, I am just sharing my opinion to others who believe GoPro is the only option in the market worth buying.

    • Do you have a link? or is it sold out?

How much did you get paid to say that? Every single comparison I saw had fake over-saturated colours. Every single comparison video I saw had no details in the clouds. In fact, in every single comparison video I saw, the Action 5 was lacking details. Action 5 lacked details around sand while underwater, lacks details to be able to see markings in the snow. I was surprised by how much better the quality of the DJI Pocket 3 was compared to the Action 5.
I almost went for the Action 5 because of all the shills online saying how much better the Action 5 is but if you actually look at the video quality during the day, it's much worse. I don't scuba / surf etc at night time so I don't care so much but I would not buy an Action 5 unless it was a secondary camera for night use.
Funny thing is that even though it's visibly worse quality than the GoPro, the reviewers always praise the quality of the Action 4 which lead me to believe DJI marketing is just giving away free cameras while you give them good reviews and pump out fake reviews.
I would also add that the Action 4 seems to have proper colours so I thought I'd just get that instead of the GoPro Hero 13 Black, but then the Action 4 is also a big pixelated mess lacking details so I thought I'd just suck it up and buy the more expensive option.

I tend to agree, each to their own though, I wont judge anyone that buys a DJI… I use my footage straight off my cameras with no post processing and Gopros are just great for that, good usable footage with no effort…

I've had a play with an Action 4, I did an offroad motorbike ride with one, I really wasn't a fan of the footage, a bit grainy and the stabilization wasn't the best…. One other thing that bugged me was the bitrate of the DJI was very high considering the video quality, from memory the bitrate was around 3 times higher than the Gopro std bitrate @ 4k50fps, but the image quality seems lower, it's odd.. (I record for 6-8 hours a day for up to a couple of weeks at a time so storage size v's quality is very important to me)

Even though I'm a bit of a Gopro fan they annoyed the hell out of me recently, their support is shocking… I'm in the process of sending a bricked 10 back to be replaced by an 11 (for $150aud, to carry as a spare for my 12), and the support process is just painful, when I got off the phone with them the other day I was telling myself I'd never buy another Gopro, but I suspect I will, lol…

      • TL;DR: Enjoy your GoPro then, nobody is forcing you.

There are plenty of reviews showing GoPro equivalent to this DJI having worse picture quality with fake colour tons.

But hey, if you are happy, you are happy and that is what matter :)

Be mindful this '4k' version has a fixed battery and limited functionality compared to the $478 'Black' version.

Hero 5 was exactly the same but back then the hardware was exactly the same and only limited by software.
You could buy a much cheaper Hero 5 and flash the Hero 5 Black firmware for 50% cheaper and voila.

I suggest folks to do some homework because it is likely that you can buy this and just flash the "Black version" firmware.

      • +3

The 5 was the only one that could be done with… This 4k version is totally different to the black, this is a smaller more compact version with a fixed non-changeable battery…

        • +1

I see, thanks for the share.

          fixed non-changeable battery

          Big red flag right there.
These batteries soon or later will go bad.
Some devices with built-in battery do allow replacement like my Microsoft XBox Elite 2 controller.
Sure, you have to open it all but it is possible. If this GoPro does not allow replacement at all, I would not buy it because of these batteries historic.

These details should be on OP's post.

  • Never played around with action cams, are they still recommended for indoor sports where it will be a stationary camera or is there better bang for buck in other style cameras for those scenarios? Looking to setup a camera to film martial arts class, set and forget type of thing. Have access to mains power so battery isnt a big deal and being stationary doesnt have to be super tiny footprint, just want something easy to use that can keep up with the pace really

  • Can it be used as a dash cam?

    • +1

I mean I guess you could. But it wouldn't be a set and forget kind of thing. You'd need to remember to switch it on each time, then switch it off, you'd need to delete footage at the end of the day, the battery life is also a hindrance. But if you have multiple vehicles and don't want to wire something or have cables I suppose that's when the cons can be ignored. I'd personally rather just get the convenience of a dash cam and cop the quality loss over the pros of better quality but constantly having to fiddle with the GoPro. Theres 4k viofo cameras for like $200 these days. I have a front, rear and internal viofo hard wire set up purchased for $313 and I’m really happy with it. It’s very set and forget.

    • +1

On top of what Donema said, some actual dash cam do not use batteries but big capacitors to feed the camera.
It makes the camera lighter and less fragile to heat compared to batteries that will give you hard time if they get too hot.

That and the fact that you can set the dash cam to automatically overwrite old files is a must have without you having to manually delete the files.

EDIT: You cannot set these cameras in parking mode to record if something hit your car by connecting it to the 12v battery.

    • Yes you could and NO you shouldn't. It's not designed for that use an is a giant "steal me" which will result in a broken window.
Pay less for a dash cam, that will work better.

Good price. My only concern is that GoPro won't be around long enough to honor warranty / extended warranty or supply parts. The share price had dropped 10 fold (US$13 to $1.05) in less than 3 year and net profit has dropped 153.6% Y/Y. I would prob still risk it (given they are good quality), but the extended warranty through GoPro might warrant extra consideration.

    • Buying locally with a local ACL warranty is the way to go, buying straight from Gopro turns into a nightmare for warranty or support claims…

TGG are great with warranty, I wandered in with my Hero8 that was playing up when it was over a year old, I explained the issue to them, they replaced it straight away, all very easy… I imagine if Gopro went bust or such they'd just refund you…

Buying direct from Gopro isn't wise, they're hard to contact, their online chat never works, you have to get a callback, they claim a 10 min wait time but it takes hours, all very annoying… Plus they only offer a 1 year warranty unless you're a subscriber, then if you are a subscriber a replacement costs $150 plus return shipping…

(Re: Gopros demise… They had the whole market to themselves for a lot of years but now they have competition with DJI and Insta360, so they have to share the action camera market… Odd issues in recent years hasn't helped them either, the 8 was a bit of a dog, the processor couldn't really keep up with the functionality, the 10 ran hot in some situations and a lot have bricked for no reason (like mine, common issue), the 12 seems good, and I haven't heard anything bad about the 13….

Long time Gopro owner, with a word of advice.

A having a Gopro doesn't provide a Gopro lifestyle. Most people don't make use of their Gopro or get enough value out of theirs to make it worth it.

    • lol, thats why there's always these action cameras on sale on fb marketplace.

      • Indeed, I have many accessories and multiple Gopros, that are bargain 2nd hand purchases.

  • Any good deals for Hero13 Black? I Bought the it with ebay PLUS120 code for $447, but they messed something up and now returning the money.

I'm still going with gopro as it has built in GPS i'm using on track (no need for the 360 view from X4).
