I mean that's pretty crap, but it's not like headphones need constant driver updates.

These are also 4 years old so I wouldn't expect many software changes anway.

I have 2 pairs of these in the household and I've had them for about 3 years and they are rock solid performers and well made. This is a steal at this price.
Can also plug them in via 3.5mm phono jack, which is handy for audio and video editing, preferred over Bluetooth for this purpose.
Great sound quality and fantastic noise cancelling.

          Hello, SimAus007
Hope you can provide some feedback on this if possible.

I have used the previous version before, which I liked. However, I had a couple of issues with it and I wanted to know if these have the same problem.
When they're connected to 2 devices simultaneously (multi-paired), and for example, if I am on a meeting (PC) and I get a call on the other device, it mutes the meeting (both mic and sound) until I either answer the call or reject it.
Also, if I am in a meeting/call and the battery is low, it would mute the sound to announce the low battery status. Or it would mute the sound to announce the name of the 2nd device it's connecting to etc

Does this version do the same thing?

@RamsesII: You can remove the voice prompts interrupting, if you already have audio playing from another device/call, just need to open the 'Surface' app on your device, select Surface Headphones, go to Settings and toggle off the 'Voice Prompts'.
This stops the Surface voice from interrupting when other audio is playing, but of course, still plays if there is silence or no active call/audio.
            Certainly works for my devices.

            • @SimAus007: @SimAus007 - Thank you!

That's good to know. I will try to get hold of them again and try this!

Do you mind if I ask what kind of notification would you then get if this is toggled off?
I mean, for things like low battery, another call coming etc… how does it handle those notifications?

              • +1

@RamsesII: Low battery can be easily viewed via the Surface app, which can also have visual pop-up 'toast notifications' on/off or you can manually view them ad-hoc.
Another incoming call? That all depends on how that call is coming in, traditional calls via the mobile network, you'll still hear that via tradition call waiting audio sent from your phone to the headphones, unless you turn that off on your phone.
In other words, all notifications that the headset itself plays, will be off when another audio source is on, however, each app, Teams, Zoom, traditional calls, WhatsApp etc has its own notifications, which might be audible or visual (depending on the app), and can be adjusted via said source.

                • @SimAus007: Appreciate the response. Thank you

The surface app is not bad but I cannot have it on my IOS device or the company PC (wasn't a big deal at the time)

I guess what I am asking was not clear in my earlier comment, sorry mate.

If I am using the Sennheiser headphones (or even the buds), and I am on a Teams call/meeting through a PC. if a 2nd call comes from the phone that is connected to the headphones (not the same PC), then call/meeting I am on, on the PC, does not get muted or interrupted.

What happens with the Sennheiser, and other headphones I tested, is that the notifications overlap the existing call/meeting.
The headphone/buds beep to notify me about the incoming call from the other device but I still hear the peopling I am speaking to in the meeting.

I am curious to know how this behaves on the Surface headphones 2.

                  • @RamsesII: It doesn't mute when an audible notification comes in (if this is switched on), but it reduces the volume of the main audio source until it finishes the notification and then the volume returns.
I'd probably stick with what you have if you can't install the Surface app on your phone/devices (due to company policy), asking for issues IMO :)

                    • @SimAus007: Awesome mate. Thank you very much for your feedback.

Love to know why they don't include Microsoft's proprietary (and garbage) wireless interface for Xbox.

    • +8

I’d have to guess it’s because they’d rather you buy two headsets instead of one

    • +9

they're clearing out old stock and eating the loss, happens all the time. don't read into it too much.

    • +1

Give me more of those Negs

      Sudah!

        Mer! Mer!

The microphone is awful, from brand new people couldnt hear me/make out what i was saying even if I used the 3.5mm line that has a mic on it. Its a faulty product in terms of use as a meeting headset for calls. Great for music though.

    • +1

I use mine daily for Zoom & Teams calls, no issues that I've noticed with the mic. Each to their own.

      • it's an issue for people on the other side. not for you. lol

        • +6

They've never said anything, and the other 2 people I call also use Surface headphones from my office. We bought them 3 years ago, so I'm sure we would know by now if it was an issue for us.

I am really curious about your comment. If I had not read your comment, I would have jumped and got the headphone. Usually windows have very poor sound devices management due to some other bloatware added to manage sound settings on the top of the OS. So, they very normally fail to switch to the microphone on the headphone when you connect one wirelessly. We don't even know about this. We assume, it is the microphone on the headphone we are using. However, thats not the case. It is still trying to use the microphone on the computer which could be very far away from you.

      • This is a fair point, and happens very often.

      • yep I get this problem with Bose all the time. Except for me my laptop mic is super sensitive so I hear about it from everyone in the meeting as they can hear so much noise and what everyone else in the room is saying.

If they can slash the price you can really tell how rip offs pricing are.

    • +8

It has been out for 4 years. I doubt there is any profit in this; it's purely to move stock of an old product. This happens with most/all tech.

Any comments on Coles and Woolworths weekly 1/2 price deals? Same as big % everyday sales at outlet stores near the airport? Also big % at JB.

  • Can someone please confirm if it is on ear or over ear? Should be over ear by the look of it

    • +2

      Over

Excellent price, decent mic for teams and good enough NC for flight

  • Thanks! Can I claim a tax deduction from the ATO for an eBay purchase if I use it for work purposes?

    • +1

Yes, keep the reciept and should be fine

    • +2

PS: Everyone knows these will never be used 100% for work and therefore only partially claimable but pretty sure ATO has bigger fish to fry.

      • +2

I'd say that in reality the split is 90% work and 10% private though, when you add up the hours in the day that you are working vs the time you actually use them privately.

Seems like you can't go wrong considering the price. They reviewed fairly well.

I have a pair of these. For $109, they're an absolute bargain. Sound quality is good, and the tactile rotary controls are very intuitive.

  • +1

Cheers OP, grabbed a pair for work!

  • +5

Sounds grouse to me - these were quite tempting at release and I was amazed Microsoft would attempt to jump into a market dominated by Sony and Bose - and yep this is what happens - fire sale and I get something I kinda wanted 4 years ago when I refused to pay the top dollar price. Bought.

    • +2

I’m the same! Eyes them off for years! Finally, I’ll have a pair! Thanks OP!

  • These or Soundcore Q45?

  • +3

Slashing price instead of jacking price. Give this OP a medal!

Mic test on this video sold it for me:

    Hell yeah got one!

  • RRP was ~$400. How this compares to the QC45? Better connection with PC?

    • You should compare with QC 35

    I work at Microsoft
    I use Bose
    end of story

  • Any chance of a restock?

Anyone else get their order cancelled after a tracking number was provided?

    • +1

Same thing happened to me. Messaged yesterday for clarification but haven't heard back.

    • +2

Same. The reason provided was: Something was wrong with the buyer's delivery address. I've seeked clarification with it but no response as yet.

  • +1

Mine arrived and promptly. How good is the ANC on these things. I always thought ANC was a bit of a myth (I have Bose QC35) but these really cut out voices, hum, next door ride on mower. Plus the useability of the wheels an tap to pause….liking them!

    • These are really well made headphones. Unfortunately, they are misunderstood due to the poor way in how windows works with managing sound devices. Hence the reason for them not being very popular.

      • Interesting. I have them paired to my Samsung S21. Just now I paired them to my work laptop W11, tested nicely through Teams. So now they are 'multi paired'. I said "Hey Google" and it activates my phone. In any case Windows looks like it works OK with them.

  • +1

If anybody thinks these sound a bit "flat", it's most likely because their default sound profile is literally "flat". If you download the Surface app, you should be able to adjust low-high levels like so: https://i.imgur.com/ig01lMM.png

I'm loving these headphones. Easily the best $100 I've spent in a long while.

  • Thanks for this - great tip - will try
