Seiko SSC947P 'The Pogue' Spreedtimer Chronograph $764.15 Delivered @ Watch Direct

130
BOXINGDAY2024

Got an email from Watch Direct this afternoon, they've started their Boxing Day sales early. This popular chrono was the first one that stood out as being a decent price. Next closest are Watson's Jewellers and Starbuy, both at $825.

Note: to get the final price you need to remove the frivolous 'Shipping Protection' from the cart that WD insist on adding to every single order. I had to edit the price in the title as well because the 'Shipping Protection' seems to fluctuate for reason (I saw it as high as $41 and as low as $19.50 on a single item).

  • Yoooooo this looks like a great price

    • Yeah, countdown has started for Deepak and Neil Watson respond…

    • +1

Could have got for 699 if the Shiels vouchers weren't expired quickly, usually a BS or full price on their website.

Wouldn't mind if 39mm but the panda is more versatile, not worth paying silly prices for a different colour).

      • +2

Yeah panda is the best of the speed timers and this is the hill I will die on

  • +4

I reckon the marketing team forgot who their target demographic was when they used the tagline " The Shane Macgowan of watches!"

    • -1

this is to watches what Shane MacGowan is to dentistry

      • He could eat an apple through a chain wire fence that lad. lol

        • Eat an apple through a tennis racquet is the metaphor I think..

  • Finally a more realistic price for this watch.

  • is the 3 o'clock register a 24hr am/pm indicator?

the problem i see with this line is that you're not too far off from an eta 7750 which is your next huge step up

    • Those movements are $138 from AliExpress (and not solar). It's about the whole package. Sure, a 24h sub-register isn't the best but still useful and balances out the dial.

  • Why is it called 'The Pogue' ? Not an Irish thing I suppose.

    • +1

In the rear with the gear!!!

      • +1

lol, I understand that meaning but it wouldn't make sense for Seiko to call their watch a pogo. Maybe 'REMF' would have been a better name to call it?

    • colonel William pogue wore the original Seiko 6139 Chronograph into space and it got nick named the pogue

    • +1

Colonel William Pogue Was an American astronaut who wore one to Skylab in 1973. He wasn’t supposed to, Omega Speedmasters were the only NASA-certified timepieces but he’d been using his Seiko 6139 chronometer through all his training so he k ew & trusted it. He snuck it into the mission by hiding it in a leg pocket of his space suit. Since then, Speedtomers with the distinctive yellow colourway are known as ‘The Pogue’.

  • Very interesting to learn the history of the name, thank you both for the information.
