I've seen it drop to this before. Almost pulled the trigger. Didn't quite.

I'm deep in Alexa ecosystem in my home, but when driving Google seems to have removed the ability for android to have Alexa as a third party voice assistant that can be "always listening" for the wake word, locking it to only "ok Google"? So this seemed like it might solve the problem of the random notes and queries etc I want to do while driving ( and maybe a little lazy garage door opening, if I get comfortable enough with the security I set up).

Anyone have one of these and can recommend, or not?

I had a gen 1 that died after a couple of years, replaced it with the gen 2 in March this year. Design and functionality is vastly improved from gen 1. Voice recognition is flawless if you keep it away from the aircon vents, I drive a diesel LandCruiser with the window down and it still picks up my commands. Has aux out which is great as my head unit doesn't have Bluetooth. In the car I mainly use voice command for Spotify, ask closing times or details for stores/shops, add items to the shopping list, weather checks, random questions regarding family debates or questions that occur in transit, turning my house lights on/off when arriving/departing etc

I recommend if you're already in the Alexa ecosystem.

Are there any ecosystems besides Alexa and Google?

I'm sick of using a pen to write on my knees when I need to make sure I remember something I thought of while driving.

It might be possible to use Apple/Siri to transcribe a memo whilst driving. Not sure that there's much else out there.

        • Oh yeah, I forgot about Apple, thanks! (It's a shame I'm a brokie lol)

Home Assistant but it does require a bit more of work implementing…

I swear Google is becoming dumber and dumber… Used to be able to follow basic commands in the past, now that thing is completely hopeless… Sick of "sorry I don't understand" and "I don't know how to help with that" for tasks that used to be completed years ago. Voice recognition of Amazon dot is much much better, but it's only marginally smarter in terms of what they can do.

"Hey Google, turn on the lights"
        -Turning off five things…
"Hey Google, turn ON the lights"
-Turning on five things. Two lights unavailable right now.
        "Hey Google, play Whitney Houston"
-Playing What is up from Hilton Connery on YouTube music… (random example, this doesn't exist AFAIK)

I've noticed the same thing, when my Android Phone updated to "Gemini Ai". Can't recognise "quarter past eight" as a time correctly anymore. Can't open some settings it used to be able to open either.

Thanks, I'll look into Home Assistant!

          • @Joost: It prob thinks it’s 8.25 freedom units.

        • Do you know if this Echo Auto is seen as any sort of device to HA from the Alexa integration (in HACS)?

I use an Alexa dot in the car now - HA sees that as a media player device so all my HA announcements are played in car.

    • great review. So when you ask for directions, does it open Google Maps or is the map displayed in the Alexa app on the phone ?

      • It opens Google maps and plans the journey. No need to type or touch the screen.

  • I like the 1st gen as no need to stick it in the car, but it didn't last long before it died. Since then, thinking to buy this gen, but don't like as it needs to stick somewhere in the dashboard and worry may not be surviving in summer heat for long

  • For those using Eyeopen app to open or close gate/garage doors note that Alexa doesn't support this in Australia (only in the US).

  • I have one. Works well so far.

  • i was going to throw mine away but it seems that people …like them? guess i should throw it on fleabay then

    • Yep or FB marketplace. I think people are slowly switching away from Google imo.

  • Does this work at all with iPhones?

    • Download Alexa app, pair device. Done. Look up description of device for basic information.
