If they do 50% everything I reckon the site will explode and it can be the best Boxing Day sales ever!

    • +2

If only. They're products are overpriced but I keep going back as honestly, no other cheaper bulbs work as well and as consistently

      • I have a mix of everthing - hue, tplink, laser, meross, no name, (~100 devices) in multiple homes - all hooked up to different assistants, alexa, google, apple, home assistant, all via different hubs, wifi, zigbee, hue. Everything including the cheap & nasty ones have worked consistently for years. I really can't justify hue pricing even at 50% off. The plastic on the base of the hue bulb feels a litte more premium than others - thats about it.

        • What would be your recommendation? Keen to hear your thoughts

          • @Ashura66: depends on what you're doing.. if all you want are a couple of light bulbs on a google mini - id go with laser

If they work better than all the others, then they're not overpriced, they're correctly priced.

        Price =/= value.

Nah, philips Hue are overpriced anyway. Don't get sucked into the eye candy because performance doesn't live up to expectations.

      • +3

Are you able elaborate and provide a few examples for the performance not living up to expectations?

I got a couple of bulbs, some just doing odd behaviour like return to the default blue light (don't know where it picked up that from), some just keep dropping out of the network. And some of the wall switch doing the same thing, takes a couple of press on random button to come back alive. They are overpriced for what they do, fancy colour light doesn't have its place in your house, except for theatre room. If you have multiple lights in a room it gets expensive quickly and clunky. In the end I just get rid of all of them and go the shelly route for simplicity.

@lgacb08: Running 3 bridges through HomeKit, around 140 lights/accessories in and around the house in total, interconnected with other smart devices through automations and scenes. Running the setup for 4 years now.

I literally had only one light die on me, and that was a month after the purchase so got a replacement, must have been a lemon from the start. Never had a light or accessory drop out or unresponsive. I even used indoor sensors outside (under eaves) in the heat/humidity and never had a problem.

"fancy colour light doesn't have its place in your house, except for theatre room"

I tend to disagree. Just looking at the Philips promo photos you can see they do work, if done correctly. You just have to have some "taste", use the right colour palettes, have the lights in the right spots to achieve discrete lighting (or emphasise a feature) and control how they flood the space, and and not make a circus out of it. Proper (coloured) lighting can also have an immense impact on your mood/mental state.

@lgacb08: I have never experienced these problems. I must be super lucky. Or you are incredibly unlucky. Glad you found something that worked in the end

Is there actually any good deals?

The Hue bulbs even at 50% off are still very over priced and I agree that thanks to Zigbee they work extremely well. I tried the Tapo ones but they’re horribly unreliable.

    • I generally go to IKEA for Zigbee bulbs… they are not as colorful as HUE … but they are 1/4th the price

Why are light bulbs so expensive?
The old incandescent bulbs used to be as cheap as 50 cents.

    • +2

      Could be explained by:

      • higher luminosity
      • Kelvin range
      • considerably lower power
      • colour options
      • bulb size ranges
      • socket ranges
      • virtually (or comparably) no heat emission from led
      • smart features…

      Also inflation lol.

This one has a small computer in it and a lot of components.

The old one was a wire that got hot and glowed.
