Supermarket Vs Fruit Market Vs Road Side Mangoes - Your Preferred?

Hey guys, I love Mango and it's the season to get some. But $2+ per Mango where I can eat a lot isn't really a good financial decision for me lol.

But I never purchased road side mangoes before, they are usually $10 per tray but someone can tell me how many mangoes in a tray. Are roadside mangoes worth it? The quality vs price, or you get what you pay for with road side fruit vendors?

My question is where do you buy your mangoes? Do you prefer a specific variety such as Calypso, Honey Gold… etc…

  • No roadside on Sydney's North Shore, so I'm left with supermarkets and grocers. I've never bought any mangoes from the supermarkets. Luckily where I am there are a few good grocers, that is, a lot of competition, or affluent area and most customers will only buy perfect, so can get a good tray for < $20 and ripish tray for $5-10 - healthy way to make ice cream for the kids.

    • Yes there are, every weekend on Mona Vale Rd just after the showgrounds, on both sides there are mango sellers with trays of Kensington Pride for $10. Haven't bought any.. curious to know if the quantity/quality is any good… Been hoping Harris Farm would have a good tray sale soon, but they are charging $25 - ridiculous. And $2.50 each for single mangos which are tiny. No thanks.

      • I see; I thought the North Shore is big. I meant between Pacific Highway/Eastern Arterial & Archbold Road.

I don't head down Mona Vale Road after Showgrounds except to go to Terry Hills, West Head, which isn't regularly.

HF "saveme" trays can be $5-$10 or $3/kg depending on the store. Chatswood grocers have competitive priced trays.

Dont eat em. Way too high in sugar. Definitely a sometimes food.

    • They have fibre too, which manages the sugar. Also, a lot of plant nutrients.

People who make these sorts of comments are the same people who will then drink a litre of coke

  • Local fruit and veg store had mangoes at $4/kg and they're great. The key thing with mangoes when they're in season is quantity because the quality is usually great this time of year.

My best bargains have happened from road side stalls, but there are plenty selling average fruit at average prices. In that case, don’t buy.
Nothing beats a big tray for peanuts when you have a two dozen mangoes and are able to lets the kids go wild, give a few to the neighbours and just enjoy the occasional plenty.
It is one of the few pleasures left where we can still beat the carefully managed yield systems the supermarkets have and get a luxury for cheap.

    • You know we're doing it rough when you mangoes and peanuts luxury

      • buying a box of mangos and sharing is pretty luxury when you think about it.. how often are you giving money away

mangos and cherries by the box for the win

When you can get mangoes for $15 a tray I wouldn't consider sharing them as a luxury.

    • I regret I have but one upvote to give.

  • I bought some at an Asian supermarket in Belmont the other day. They were incredible - some of the best I've ever had. Not cheap though at over $3 each.

  • Sister used to live up in KNX.

Every time she travelled down, would bring several trays of mangoes in her luggage.

Mainly due to price … Although were from exact same suppliers for Coles/WW/IGA.

  • It did not matter if from an Orchid in Darwin, the markets, stores, roadside resellers, it all depends on the variety you prefer, and the watering prior and ongoing after budding of the fruit.

It varies so much….. so if you see good quality and a fair price, simply buy them.

Had a tray delivered from Cairns last week…superb taste and juiciness, but the sizes were all over the shop and the appearance was eerie.

Had 3 from Coles near best before date yesterday, delicious and dirt cheap.

Had one from an overhanging branch over a fence in Bundy last week, tart!

Still, Thai Sticky Rice home made with rainbow multi flavoured rice will be weekly until the supply dries up.

  • Any good/cheap roadside pickups around Mermaid Waters, GC?

  • Since this post brought it to my attention, decided to stop by one opposite Lane Cove National Park today as we drove past.

Suspected bloody bait pricing and proved to be the case and drove off after checking. $15/tray was a tiny tray; slightly bigger than normal trays $40.

  • Fruit market, in over 10y living here in Sydney, I've never tasted such heaven mangoes like those.

Fruits and vegetables, if you wanna the real deal buy from those open market; If you wanna eat artificial crappy, buy from the supermarkets.
    The same applies for meat.
