don't you need to add in a plan for this, or can it be bypassed?

    • -5

bypassed on a 365 day plan.
      Chuck $10 on done

      • +16

Not really bypassed when you still have to pay $10

      • +2

        So for $10 will last 365 days ? calls / data ?

        • Yes. Per minute and per megabyte cost applies.

    • I'll let you know when one dollar is the difference if I get to eat or not , it may be half price but it's like splitting hairs. 👎

  • Good for Boost Porting ?

    • Yes I'd be interested in this too

    • Is it possible to port out without recharge?
if so that will be good for Boost renewal

    • +1

No, because you have to choose a plan and add credit.

    • +4

From personal experience, only $2 Telstra sims allow you to activate without any plan/recharge.

Not sure if there are any issues with porting from Boost though since I have never personally tried.

      • +2

Lebara's 2$ sim also comes with the same amount of credit.

        • Can this be used to port out of boost? No need to recharge?

        • Lebara $2 sim comes with $2 credit?

          • @io: No, but see my other post about activating a $2 Lebara SIM.

      • +3

From personal experience, only $2 Telstra sims allow you to activate without any plan/recharge.

Apparently $2 Boost SIM's can also be activated in the same way. (It makes sense, given how intertwined Telstra and Boost are.)

The only other $2 SIM that I've read about that can be activated without further payment is a Lebara one, but you have to call and speak to someone to do it. Otherwise, the minimum is $5 if you want to DIY online.

Not sure if there are any issues with porting from Boost though since I have never personally tried.

I've ported from Boost to Telstra $2 and back to Boost without any issues, as have many others. Occasionally things can go wrong and Customer Service intervention is required. See https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/841500

As for this deal, I can only see it being of value if you needed a replacement Amaysim SIM in a hurry for some reason, and couldn't wait for one to arrive by post.

      • Can the $2 Telstra sim receive calls without putting any credit in???

        • Yes. Officially only for seven days (as per the warning message), but usually six months in practice.

          • @Colin2905: What happens after 6 months? Can i just top up to keep on receiving calls?

            • @Homr: The SIM (and number) gets killed off. Yes, you could recharge and keep it going, but it'd be at whatever the minimum Telstra recharge cost was at the time. Or if you don't mind changing your number every six months, just activate a new $2 Telstra SIM.

In theory, you could port between Telstra and Boost $2 SIM's every six months to keep the same number. Or maybe there's something in place to prevent that, I don't know.

If it's a number that you don't want to risk losing, I'd suggest not trying to cheap out too much, and use a PAYG option from Aldi, Amaysim or Lebara, depending on your preferred network.

              • @Colin2905: Thanks, thats probably too much trouble. I'd rather use amaysim and pay the $10

  • +2

Could you use this to save $10 with Amaysim's NBN bundles?

    • yes

    • Think it needs to be one of those 28 day SIMs not PAYG

  • +12

Not sure what the point of these sims is when you need a plan to activate them anyway (which would include a free sim if you buy online anyway).

    • +4

You don't need to wait for a Sim card to be sent to you. It's the cost of convenience.

      • +7

There are always other options in-store, e.g. Amaysim $30 (or Optus $35) SP for $12 atm.

The $1 is pretty much wasted as you need to pay full price for adding a plan to it.

        • +1

Yeah, but you might already have a plan and need a new SIM.

  • +1

    this thing should be free

    • -1

      why?

  • +1

Good to have ready for when they turn off the 4G network 😜

  • +6

It's free to grab at many city hotels placed with attraction flyers. It is also available from the concierge at Paddy's Market.

  • Good for an annual plan to receive calls/texts only.? This or the Aldi sim?
