Bosch GDS 18V-450 HC 18V 5.0Ah 1/2" Mid Torque Impact Wrench Combo Kit $399 Delivered @ Sydney Tools

130

Was shopping for an Impact Wrench and came across this kit - seems like a good way into the Bosch Professional ecosystem with something a bit stronger than the entry level kits, for someone more interested in a proper impact wrench rather than the driver/drill combo sets or increasing their angle grinder/blower collection.

"Low stock" is noted for all store locations, but from what I can see there's plenty of stores that still have stock at the moment. Free shipping over $99.

This one has an ATL on Amazon according to the camels of 327.36 for the Skin ONLY - so for an extra 70-odd, you also get:

  • Small L-Boxx carry case
  • Compact charger
  • 2x 5Ah batteries

For reference:

  • The skin ONLY is also being sold at Total Tools atm for $427

  • The Kit with ONE 5Ah battery instead of two (as far as I can tell - the website doesn't actually list the contents) is being sold at Tool Kit Depot for $399

450Nm should be plenty for anything automotive (I've got a 180Nm entry level kit that simply can't undo wheel nuts on older cars) and as per this review, Bosch seems to under-rate their tools rather than give inflated numbers the way the US brands tend to (note - the reviewer is using the smaller GDS18V-330 HC, not this model) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=v3sWToVRsH8

In all honesty, 450Nm is probably overkill unless you're working on something heavy duty or extremely old, but torque levels are switchable (if you're worried about destroying threads) and the lower powered kits don't seem to actually be any cheaper ATM. The head length is also kind of large - if you really need something compact, the Milwaulkee stubby range might be a better fit.

And it goes without saying, this shouldn't be used to tighten wheel studs. hand tighten and torque wrench to spec for that.

The next step up from here in the Bosch range is something like the 1000Nm jobbies, but unless you really need that >500Nm torque, you're lugging around an extra few kg for every job for something you're not using.

^All the torque numbers above are the real max torque ratings, not the nonsense "nutbusting" or "breakaway" torque used to inflate numbers.

Wheel nuts on cars, usually I find they are over tightened when they come back from tyre places and mechanics, I use breaker bar to loosen at home, tighten with toque wrench incase I need to change a tyre when on the road. Love my breaker bar.

    • This should be made more widely known. Not many good qulaity mechs left, most just bang 'em together as fast as possible.
I watch them to make sure they use a torque wrench (not always easy to watch).

    • I just keep a 0.75m breaker bar in my car, it fits nicely under the carpet in the back of the boot. It's quicker than using the one that comes with the car.

    • I've been keeping an eye out for torque wrenches over the last few months, any advice for a novice on what to buy?

Was thinking of just getting one of the digital adapters, but unsure of the Nm range to look for. Just going to be doing the easily serviceable stuff on my small hatchback myself.

Did buy a luggage scale to use as a last resort though lol

Good find OP, deals looks great.
I just got into the Bosch 18V ecosystem and for DIY and random used, brilliant.

Don’t need this but even just for the batteries which I was contemplating… it’s tempting

    Edit:
5 minutes passed and I bought it

  • Looks like a good deal. It would be handy if the 1st power level was 150nm instead of 250nm

  • This is a good deal with the batteries included. I already jumped on the AEG train for a mid-torque and a high-torque which are very highly reviewed, for use on my truck. But I had to go to eBay to get decent pricing on new-old-stock items. So no warranty etc.

If this deal had been on I would have got this instead, and then probably just get a Bosch high-torque as well. But the previous model AEG/Rigid 1/2" high-torque I got is basically unbeatable performance wise according to the torque test channel. When working on a rusty old truck, more torque is always better.

  • Excellent deal OP. Been looking for a Bosch one for the motorhome and the L-Boxx plus batteries and charger seal the deal for me.

  • Ive had the makita DTW700Z (1000NM breakaway) fail to undo wheel nuts on a car and only the DTW1001 was able to undo it so 800NM break away may not be enough. The nuts were tightened by a tire shop

    • Out of the 10,000+ wheel nuts I've used it on, my Dewalt mid torque (DCF891, 1152 breakaway) has never struggled to remove any aside from one that was cross threaded. It still got it off, just took maybe 10 seconds.

the 'hybrid' impact wrench is cool but weaker @ 200Nm. However its versatile in that it accepts driver bits as well as 1/2" sockets

      X = hybrid
      200 = Nm

      Bosch GDX 18V-200

      • Yeah I've got an earlier model of the hybrid that I bought back in 2016 and it's been fantastic, just underpowered for automotive stuff beyond smaller fixings.

Flexibility of having a socket as well as driver bit holder makes it super versatile.

IIRC I paid a similar amount for the hybrid impact driver, a light hammer drill, carrying case, charger and 2x 2Ah batteries, and they're all still going strong despite a fair bit of abuse over the years (drilling a bunch of 16mm holes in concrete with the hammer drill that really struggled to get through it).

It's a good spread of tools in that kit, but it's good for people to know they have a ceiling below some more demanding asks (but still pack a decent punch).

    • i have the hybrid impact driver in that set, it has a special 1/2”-1/4” shaft on it and it undoes wheel nuts with ease, but can also be used with the 1/4” as an impact driver for screws.

  • I have one of these in the toolbox at home. Performs great and have been very happy with it.
