Is DGtek a Better Option than nbn?

I just recently moved in the CBD and my new building had FTTB.

Max speed I can get is 100/40 and this is hurting my work as I use high bandwidth throughout the day. I had FTTP in my old place which was faster and had speed boosts available.

Recently found that DGTek is available in my building and see it offers 500/500 option.

Why would people be on NBN at double the cost for half the speed?

DGTek isn't everywhere. So if it's available for you, go for it.

I have no experience with the company but it seems like a great offer if you can get those speeds

    • How to know if DGTek is available ? Is there like a address search website similar to what nbn isp have?

  • nbn needs to supply internet to the entire country at the same price. My parents getting fixed wireless from a tower that supplies maybe 100 people and cost hundreds of thousands is definitely being subsidised by me in a densely packed suburb.

DGtek can run a single cable into a high density apartment building at a fraction of the price, of course it's cheaper.

And that number will only get lower with Starlink providing a better, faster and more reliable service compared than NBN FW/Sat.

      • Only if starlink prices come down a bit.

        • Very unlikely for that to happen. Roaming went from $174 a month to $195 a month in the last few months. I don't see them introducing a tiered system either, so unlikely to go down.

I had 1GB/1GB FTTP with them for about 3 years in Melbourne CBD, via Pineapple, and it was the best!

Same. And I was on the promo price of $81 for that 1000/1000 plan for years so was relatively cheap too.

      • holy shit thats insane. wish i could access them

What do you do? I worked on 100/40 all through COVID with my wife also at home. We could both video call and the work plus I was also hosting the work NAS at my house.

Unless you are constantly uploading/downloading something, 100/40 should be plenty. Most people settle for 50/20 NBN speed and are happy with that.

Don't start that rabbit hole, never ending debate.

    • i work for an international MSP. some sites i VPN into take so long to do things which were almost easier at my old apartment.

Will move to pineapple this week. (anyone here got a referral? pm me)
      Thx all for your input!.

Are you sure the VPN isn't causing that? Just because you have a faster internet connection won't necessarily mean the VPN will be faster and those sites/things will load faster.

Have you done a speed test on the VPN to see if that is limited?

        • i had no issues at last place on 500\500 FTTP.
Sending larger files hurting on 40mbit.
I also notice around 3pm internet goes crazy slow..

Okay, so it could be the Internet Speed then and not the VPN. Just in my experience on my 400/400, I would connect to the VPN and get 100/30.

All the kids arrive home from school. So not surprised.
