Are Some Cold Packs - Used for Sports Injuries and Fighting The Heat - Better Then Others?

Hi there,gel/ice/cold packs.

You know, the rectangular, blue liquid filled plastic used for sports injuries. Mostly cheap cheap. You keep them in the fridge/freezer. I'd like to stock up for summer, as i like to use them against my skin to cool the blood, and cool down that way.

But are there better ones? Ones better than the Kmart ones, because of idk, different coolant ratios, or different 'gel' altogether?

With a cost to functionality ratio in mind, are there some very good ones? That get quite cold and last a long time? Or are they all basically same same but different?

Those therapeutic gel packs are designed to not be overly cold so that you can stick them on your skin directly, they don't stay cold for very long since they're just used for cold compresses and treating minor injuries.

The main 'battery' in a gel pack is actually the water — the higher the water content, the longer it stays cold.
So if you want the best possible ice pack for cooling down — you can just make your own by crushing some ice cubes into some kind of plastic bag or ziplock bag and just holding it against your neck or your armpit. Some people also suggested using 1 part rubbing alcohol mixed in 3 parts water for a more gel-like consistency.

Or you could also also buy some Zooper Doopers from amazon and suck on them on a hot day. The sugarfree ones taste terrible though.

Water is basically the best material we have at phase changing for reducing temperature. It's why professional athletes still jump in a wheelie bin full of ice after a long session rather than have some complicated chemical to do it, an ice bath is the best thing there is. Ice turning into water sucks a huge amount of energy and is not going to kill you in terms of toxicity.

  • The Bodichek Hot/Cold Pack packs are great, the outer cover is live a canvas., Its very tough. Last a very long time.
