Japan Airlines Rebooking Fee - Way to Get It Cheaper?

I currently have a flight booked from Melbourne to Japan in April next year, and I'm needing to rebook this later until October or so.

Looking at Japan Airlines and it seems like it's $200 per flight per person to rebook, so it would cost us $800 just to change flights. Given flights are cheaper in October and we're rebooking 2 return flights, is there a way to get this cheaper?

$800 on top of the $2,400 we paid pushes up these flights quite a bit for economy.

Any advice appreciated, thanks!

But you knew that when you booked, right ?

Yes, but we didn't anticipate having to move the holiday. Life gets in the way sometimes…

we didn't anticipate having to move the holiday.

So you got travel insurance, right?

        • -2

Why would I? The full holiday hadn’t been booked yet, just the flights

@viperacr: Buy travel insurance as soon as you have paid any part of the holiday that you want covered for loss. In this case $800 worth. Although it's unlikely that you have a reason to move that would be covered by insurance anyway so no real loss this time.

@viperacr: Not sure I quite follow your logic. The flights overseas are often the most expensive bit or at least 2nd most expensive part of your holiday. Apart from that, if lets say there was an earthquake or another national disaster in Japan or you got sick, unless you had insurance before there was any sort of warning you might not be covered.

How about through your credit card? Is it a life thing or have you had a family emergency? I’d give them a call and see if they can help you if it is for compassionate reasons. If it is because plans have changed then unfortunately that is on you for not having insurance.

        • jv, I thought you are the one who says travel insurance doesn't work if you still in Australia?

          • @foxmulder: I've used it often for domestic travel when hiring a car. It works out cheaper than getting car rental insurance.

    Travel insurance ?

  • What is the $ to cancel your booking? any refund?

    • $1,200 to cancel the flights, so around half our money back.

$200 per flight seems reasonable to me

You could potentially wait a bit for a significant schedule change that would allow you to cancel it and get a full refund but you'd run the risk to an even-higher airfare in October.

This is the way. I have a booking on Turkish Airlines. They've changed one flight by 30 minutes (which shortens the flight and is beneficial but I can now cancel or change dates free of charge if a better deal comes along)

  • Airlines are tricky, even October flights are cheaper, you may only be able to change to the same class code as your current tickets.

To determine the real cost of the change, try to make the change to the dates that you want and the website will show you the exact cost. You can then make a decision on whether you want to refund or change the flight.

Not sure if this page is applicable but have you actually talked to the JAL people or just read the costs on a website?
