If you want to melt and catch fire go on these dates

      Nice in Hokkaido though.

      • +1

It surely is. When I was there last year at that time I was walking with a relative who lives there.

As we walked down the street, we passed two young guys, and I heard "something something gaijin". I only understood that gaijin means foreigner in its most polite interpretation. I asked what they had said.

"I thought all the foreigners had left already." Beautiful weather, like a spring day, but locals will tell you it's boiling. I went back to Tokyo afterwards and I was sweating in places I didn't know I had places.

  • +11

Japan is a sauna at that time of year. Unless you go straight to Hokkaido.

  • +3

I went during those times once, honestly not much worse than the QLD heatwave going on. 35ish and 85%+ humidity.

You'll be constantly sweaty, but its totally doable.

Some people will spend $500 on a night out; call it an expensive ramen trip :p

    • +7

honestly not much worse than the QLD heatwave going on. 35ish and 85%+ humidity.

This is exactly why I don't live in QLD. lol

    • +3

For example, beautiful Kyoto traps the heat & humidity in summer - surrounded by hills. Little breeze. Its known for it's terrible temperature inversions.

Much worse than heat & humidity of FNQld I am used to.

Definitely avoid at that time of year. I made that mistake on my first trip to Japan😜
Planned a jam packed week in Kyoto in August (for famous festival), but managed less than half. The heat was too exhausting.

Prefer the cooler change of season weather of April & September. The landscape is beautiful then.

At that time, could try the much cooler Japan Alps @2500+m🗻
      Hike the mountains and lakes.

Japan is always worth returning to see. Spent more than a year over many trips exploring different regions & totally enjoying Japan🎏

      • What about, say, February…is that an ok time? Nice and cool?

        • Never visited in February. Tokyo temp 5-10C!
Like in this Summer Deal, depends where you are going & want to do.

Almost anytime is great to visit Japan! Just check what is on at that time of year - that interests you. And take appropriate clothes.

My favourite times to visit are in Spring & early Autumn. Earliest I've visited was mid-March as it warmed up & flowers blossomed. Amazing watching transition of Spring flowering. Something the Japanese get very excited by🌸

          Some prefer the cooler weather…
In Hokkaido there are ice-breaker cruises in February!! Want to do that 1 day.

Spent an amazing early April in Hokkaido - in Shiretoko National Park. (Beautiful nature, bears roaming, free hot springs in mountains, waterfalls plunging into sea…) Snow plough still cleared mountain roads. Cold but totally enjoyable.

Dec-March is good time to see Snow Monkeys near Nagano. (Yet to do that)

Of course Okinawa is tropical & warm. 15-20C in Feb.
A different part of Japan. Coral reef islands, butterflies, Hawaiian music in the streets of Naha… But no hot springs.

Visit Onsen (natural hot springs) any time! Amazing soaking in an outside pool (Rotenbuto) in mountains with snow falling!
Onsen villages can be amazing for a day or longer. Often buy a day pass & soak in multiple Onsen most of day.

(Japanese are suitably impressed (it's in their nature) by the range of Onsen I've enjoyed, from an island North of Hokkaido to a hot rock pool on an island South of Kyushu. There are always more to experience.)

I visit for amazing Matsuri (Festivals).
Base myself in a place with good transport links in local region. Rather than race all over the place. To simply enjoy🎏

  • +3

Tokyo in August? Just a terrible idea. Osaka in early July was just bearable if you like it hot and humid. Tokyo in August would suck 100x

    • Luckily trains and buses were invented a while ago

      • People have to go outside into the high heat & humidity of Summer, sometime! Otherwise you won't see much of Japan.

Local buses & trains can be very hot & sticky in Summer in Japan! Especially to popular tourist areas.

Not much use travelling overseas, just to spend it all inside.

        • Nothing a qlders isn't used to

          • @belongsinforums: Am a Qldlander!

Prefer not to pay💰 to travel to prolonged high humidity & temperatures - worse than most experience here, for my holiday!! That makes no sense.

Lots of other more pleasant places, climate wise, for a holiday at that time of year. Like Europe, NZ, Tasmania, etc as I've frequently done🌎

    • +3

You live in Australia and call that unbearable do you just hibernate from December to March?

      • just hibernate

People here often work & live with aircon on. Can't easily do that exploring outside like a tourist.

Many complained with last month's short heatwave conditions in Western Sydney.

Japan experiences similar but prolonged periods of high humidity combined with 35C-38C.
It is unbearable in many areas of central Japan in August. Common topic of discussion in travel forums. Especially areas away from breezes like Kyoto.

Traditionally, houses there are designed for the heat of summer. Even in snow covered mountain villages, the thin walls & cooling only aircon surprised me.

My most used Japanese phrase travelling there in August was Atsui-desu (it's hot)!! Locals agreed.

Its energy draining visiting tourist sites in those conditions - as most tourists do. I endured it once in August! But never again!!

Why choose to visit at that time?? Just to spend all your time inside in aircon to avoid the heat & humidity.

Visit at better times & enjoy Japan more🎏

        • -1

because there will be less people there and you might not be available at a different time

or are you saying Japan is a ghost town during that time? Most houses in Australia dont even have ceiling fans and a lot of older houses i’ve rented doesnt have aircons so clearly peoplr dont all do what you say

          • +1

            @Freestyle:

are you saying Japan is a ghost town during that time?

No. (Unlike hot Summers in Paris that empties of many locals. And fills with tourists. Have experienced it.)

Summer is festival time in places like Kyoto. Absolutely crowded with Japanese travellers.

But they only travel for a few days, unlike most here travelling to Japan. Japanese know what to expect (hot & humid). So a few days is OK for them.

Knowing that about country you want to travel to - maybe pick a different destination or time of year. Take note of the warnings of experienced travellers.

Crowded conditions make travel at that time of prolonged high temperatures & humidity even worse.

Need to book accommodation & transport well in advance. Almost as busy as Golden Week.

The Bon Festival holiday in mid-August across Japan makes it a very busy time, with families returning home to honour their ancestors by tending to family graves.

As my birthday is during Daimonji Festival mid-August, (spectacular Kanji characters set fire in Kyoto hills) I chose to celebrate it there.
So I have experienced that time. Was unbearable heat & humidity! Stayed in aircon as much as possible. Booking difficulty a month ahead, meant moving every few days to next accommodation.

Most houses in Australia dont even have ceiling fans and a lot of older houses i’ve rented doesnt have aircons so clearly peoplr dont all do what you say

            Never claimed that!
Many (not everyone) living in high humidity & temperatures here - work in aircon, travel to work in aircon, & come home to aircon.
Even public transport where I live has cool aircon in Summer.

There are ways around lack of cooling…
Elderly I've talked to here - jump on free buses to sit in aircon comfort - with none in their small flats. And sit in aircon at shops. That way they save money & socialise👍

Fans barely help in high humidity conditions. Sweat can't evaporate - the basis of cooling by fans.
My pedestal fans were free or less than $10 new, so most can have them.

With temp here in 30's & humidity around 70% (after weeks of rain), have the aircon on in my old house. Fans are next to useless😉

            • -1

@INFIDEL: TL;DR It's balls hot in Tokyo in Summer, enough to make a Qlder say "fark me!" Old people bail others up at the shopping centre because they are now cool and have nothing else to do.

  • Jumper weather if you reside in Cairns.

    • You wearing a jumper right now?

  • +4

I was in Japan August this year, honestly was hot and muggy — but definitely not unbearable (aside from getting a few runs done, which were tough even at night), plenty of hikes. Indoors is all air conditioned anyways. Makes the beers/pocari sweat all that much better.

    • +1

As with all travel, it depends what you are into. So best to know what we want from travel.

Travelling to stay inside doesn't interest me. I get enough of that here. Yes it is different in Japan… But I've been so many times🎏

I love hiking in nature and visiting old shrines & temples. Best done when not so hot & humid. It's too tiring.

Hiked the Kumano Kodo trails years back. Thoroughly enjoyed the 1000yr old UNESCO listed paths.

Spent a day there getting to know an 80 year old Yamabushi (mountain ascetic hermit). Carrying all his belongings in a small bamboo basket. They should not carry anything metal, but he accepted a fresh gas canister for his stove.

And parts of the 88 Temple Pilgrimage on Shikoku. Hiking with Buddhist Henro (pilgrims). Farmers gave us delicious mandarins.

Hiked 2 days to the legendary oldest tree in Japan, on Yakushima Island - South of Kyushu. Most Japanese I met want to do that.
A couple shared their delicious Basashi (horse sashimi) & good drip coffee on top of a mountain. All I had to offer were Tim Tams. They loved them.

Unforgettable unique experiences unlike any here. Well worth exploring!

  • Yes, Honshu is a hot sauna in August, but these airfares coincide with the Mount Fuji climbing season. I'll be there next year.

  • +3

Great price, terrible time to travel to most of Japan due to heat & possibility of typhoons.

Flown so many times with Jetstar to Japan in past around this price. Just took carry-on for 4+ week trips.

  • Is Jetstar more comfortable on long haul flights? Do the planes have entertainment etc?

    • +2

Yes, they fly their 787s on these routes which is a widebody plane and you will find it more comfortable than the single-aisle aircraft that fly domestically/Trans-Tasman.

The seats have entertainment screens however you do have to pay to use it (they are low cost remember). It's cheaper to purchase it when you book/on the manage booking section of their website than paying to access it on the plane.

    • I believe the flight being rescheduled at the last second leaving you to scramble to rearrange your hotel bookings is meant to be the entertainment

  • +1

If I want to go to Japan during that time, I would have booked with their last Return for Free deal, its the summer period which puts me off going.

  • Have been in summer a few times myself, yes it's hot and humid, but the festivals are great fun. The Yosakoi in Kochi especially is great fun, also have stuff like the Neputa in Aomori, Gion Yamakasa in Fukuoka, and Gion Matsuri in Kyoto (but I bet it's crowded to hell these days).

  • +1

If you're coming from BNE the temp is the same as it is now so no big deal.

    • Yeah we're from QLD but living in VIC and we're keen to get over there during these dates to escape the cold

    • If I have relatives in colder climate who can house me for a month or 2 to avoid the heat in Qld I will do that in a heart beat, I really hate the heat here !!

      • Sounds like you guys should do a swapsies.

    • From my experience in areas of Japan, the actual rather than reported average (over whole month of August for years) of temp & humidity is much worse than that currently in BNE. Heat & humidity is also more persistent.

Less than 26C at moment in BNE after yesterday 19-27.

Monthly averages remove the outliers (peaks) which really affect people! We discuss how hot it is by the hottest days & how long it lasted for.

See the "feels like" temp which incorporates temp + humidity.

Live in BNE, spent over a year exploring Japan. Many trips in different seasons & regions.

I found August in Central Japan far too exhausting due to temp & humidity. Never again!

There are far better times to visit🌡

      Depends where you are going!
      Japan is 3000k N to S.
Not the same temp across Japan!

Consider the temp 3000k North of Hobart (Cairns). It is definitely not the same temp, even though its the same country!

  • +2

Japan summer is no joke. Only go during summer season if you are are a serious heat lover.

    • Summer lovin, happened so fast

    • Went for the famous Summer Matsuri (Festivals). And sweltered!

      • we went to the Sendai Jazz Festival in early September last year and milady refused to go out at night to the free night performances because it was intolerably hot and sweaty

when it's too hot and humid your body can't lose heat and you can suffer heat prostration - we actually saw a guy fainting from the heat brought through a huge festival crowd to beside me for emergency - I gave him my flat (free plastic advertising) fan which gave him some immediate relief - only because I still had my pocket rechargeable fan - otherwise I'd be dying too.

        • Loved Sendai - but haven't been back since the devastating Tsunami.

Hand fans are a common promotional gift at Summer festivals in Japan. Some fans are enormous! Creates a pleasant breeze, but hardly cools in high humidity💧

Being in crowds in those conditions makes it much more unpleasant. But hard to miss out on!

Chased an acrobatic Shisa ("lion dog" creature from Okinawan folklore) away in a festival in Naha.
Being a naughty spirit, it had playfully stolen my bag! I hit it over the head with a huge festival fan I'd been given. The audience loved the performance & laughed😄
They sprayed the crowds with water - which became an enormous water fight. I was saturated!
Loved it all, especially being dragged into it all by the locals👍

Had drinks with a Japanese Jazz singer at the Bondi Jazz Festival long ago. The band had won a trip to Sydney in a Jazz Festival in Japan. Her songs in English were amazing. But found she spoke almost no English…

  • Perth doesn't exist :(

  • +2

By all means, don't travel Japan in July and August especially Osaka and Kyoto.

  • I really don't get why people would think Tokyo is unbearable in that time of the year. You should try go Bali, Bangkok or Taipei at those times, you'll know what's true unbearable.

    • +1

It's simply travel advice, as posted on many travel forums
      Ignore it if you want.

Doesn't mean climate in other places isn't more unbearable.
It's only relative to travelling at different times of year in Japan.

If you are going to Bali etc, people should expect the heat & humidity. Who doesn't know that?

Unlike those well known small HOT areas close to the Equator…
Japan's climatic conditions vary widely with the seasons!
      And by latitude (3000k N to S)!!
A bit less than Australia @3800k.
      Bali is only 112k N to S!

From below 0C to very hot & humid in Tokyo. Okinawa is warmer & tropical, Hokkaido much colder.

From experience (travelling from islands North of Hokkaido to islands off Okinawa in different seasons) both heat & cold may not be that pleasant.

But Winter is at least easier to cope with by wearing warm clothes. You want to be active to keep warm, rather than exhausted by the heat & humidity.

Best to choose to visit at a more pleasant time! You'll enjoy it more.

      • If your lifestyle / work is flexible, you can skip extremes of weather altogether - through travel.

Rather than choosing to holiday when the weather is about it's worst (for the discount prices), choose a more suitable time / destination. And enjoy it more!

Done that for years, travelling overseas up to 9 months a year. Thoroughly enjoyed it.

  • after you add on all the JQ extras, full service ANA or JAL are likely cheaper, faster and just all-round better from MEL or SYD

    • You know you don't have to pay for any extras!
Depends entirely on what you want.

My first 2 Japan flights were with JAL. Flying on to Europe for 3 months each.
All the many flights after that were with Jetstar. For 4 week min.

On full service JAL flights - I threw in too much stuff (often never used), because it cost no more.
It was tiring lugging all the extra weight.

With much more travel experience, realised flying with only carry-on luggage was so much more convenient & freeing. No waiting for luggage, securing luggage on travels, concern about lost luggage… Am often first on flight out of airport.

Opened up other options. And saved lots of money (not paying for extras I don't want) - to travel more.

Quicker Direct Jetstar flights from BNE suit me.

Of course travelling with a full service airline doesn't mean you can't travel light.
But never found I missed the added services I was paying for, after taking budget airlines to many countries.

  • How the weather mid May to early June? Manageable?
