How to Run CAT5 Cables into My nbn Enclosure?

Hi all,

We have a NBN enclosure box (which houses our internet router/PoE switch - for our doorbell), we're wanting to connect our CAT5 camera connections (4 cables) which have been terminated outside the box (about 1m away).

I am a bit of a newbie to this and wanted some ideas on how/best way to manage these connections?

  • do I relocate the PoE switch and run a extra cable from this to the internet router?
  • somehow run/extend all the CAT5 camera cables inside the enclosure box
  • have a separate PoE switch for just the cameras only?

  • your camera poe cables have nothing to do with NBN

but if need to remotely view my live feed from camera, doesn't it need internet to do that?

Your poe switch just needs to be connected to your internet.

What are your cameras? Do they go back to an NVR?

If the cables are 1m away, unlikely going to be easy to relocate the cables without coming down another section of the wall. You could try running the cables through some square conduit and then come in above the NBN enclosure (need to make a new whole in the wall).

    Photos available as well?

If you are good a DYI and confident, then sure try it, otherwise if you don't know what you are doing, get someone else in who does to do it. You could risk damaging stuff if you are unsure.

    • They're reolink cameras. Yes forgot to mention they do go to an NVR. But I suppose i could run a single cable thru the square conduit (NVR==>wall==>NBN box) you mention to the NBN box. I'll get some photos later tonight.

      • Yes, that would possibly be easier. Depends on how things look now. Photos would be good.

        • here are some images of the nbn box and the camera cables ( about 1m away)

          • @godofpizza: Any chance of the photo showing the space between the NBN Cabinet and the camera cables?

            • @geekcohen: it's pretty much a blank wall.

@godofpizza: I think what you said before might be the easiest solution based on the info you have provided.

                • @geekcohen: thanks, it is normal/accepable to drill holes into the enclousre?

@godofpizza: In the front panel door? No.

You will probably need to put a hole in the wall above or below the enclosure, using a brush wall plate and then come into the enclosure from either angle. There should be kinda pre determined wholes available that might just pop out and then run the cable in.

  • Run cable from switch to another switch that cameras patch into? got photos to make more sense of this?
Happy to walk you through the best way to do this or if in Melbourne can come out and get it all wired appropriately, provide additional switches and configure it all for remote access.

  • If you're not bothered by the aesthetics, get four 1.2m cables and a wall-mounted coupler patch panel (or four Female to Female CAT5/6 couplers)

  • You sound a bit clueless, just pay for someone to sort it out.

Sounds like you dont know enough yet to be playing with this stuff. Go and use an internet search and research how it all works, then find some youtibe clips to show you how to fix it.
