PC Build Troubleshooting Service

I'm been building my first PC, and run into a problem. After installing all components, it wouldn't boot, and would stop at the red CPU light on the motherboard, then the power would go off and it would come on again, then the red light again. I tried reseating the CPU several times, tried unplugging and reattaching all the power cables from the PSU. No improvement.

Then the next day, when I tried again, the power wouldn't even come on. Completely dead when I press the power button on the front panel. Removed PSU and tested it independently (jumped it), and it seems to be working fine. But when I hook it up to the motherboard, nothing happens. I'm worried I may have fried the CPU or motherboard. But I guess it could be something simple. I don't think the front panel cable is the problem because I tried starting it with a screwdriver directly onto the power switch header on the motherboard, and didn't work.

All components are compatible according to pcpartpicker, and all components are new and recent/current generation (intel 13th generation)

Just wondering if there is a cheap online troubleshooting service where an expert can quickly help me locate the issue. Or is there a physical store that would not charge much to have a quick look and test each component?

Thanks

I would completely strip and re-build first. Might have an earthing issue somewhere.

Had a similar issue about 15 years ago and I troubleshooted everything. Eventually I just gave up, pulled it apart and started again. Worked flawlessly from there.

Does the motherboard need a bios update via USB to recognise the CPU?

Is the front panel switch to the motherboard on the correct pins?

As above, I would fully disassemble and start from scratch.

    • Does the motherboard need a bios update via USB to recognise the CPU?

No, it shouldn't beause they are the same generation intel 13th, B760m

Is the front panel switch to the motherboard on the correct pins?

Yes, because initially it was powering on (then getting red CPU light). Now it's not powering on.

Step 1: Take the motherboard out of the case. Disconnect everything except CPU and one stick of ram. Put it on a flat surface (we used to use the motherboard box, turned inside out). Plug in to power and monitor and see if it POSTS.

  • Where are you based?

    • Just north of Brisbane

      • If you want to drive down to Sydney I can sort it for you :)

  • could it be the ram? might not with the other problem you mentioned
