I couldn't see where the one in the deal states it is made in Japan. Is it? Couldn't find much about the company either.

It isn't made in Japan. It isn't a Japanese brand. It is a Japanese sounding name only. This is often used by Chinese manufacturers to make their product seem higher quality.

The blade has some Japanese writing, "ミナミノ園芸", literally "Minamino horticulture". This is just made up. There is a similar sounding company in Osaka, "ミナミ園芸", or "Minami horticulture", which is a gardening supply shop. Nothing to do with knives.

          • @mister_snrub: Yeah that's what I thought. All the made in Japan stuff I've seen clearly states it's made in Japan. Cheers

@mister_snrub: Yep. This is usually the case. Just a bunch of Chinese companies trying to bank on Japanese reputation for reliability.

One has 335 credible sounding reviews and a better honed handle, I know which one I'm buying.
Both are otherwise made of 420 stainless steel and have a serrated edge… but one of them has Asian writing on it from an otherwise unknown brand (like that makes a difference).

Like what the other person that replied to you said, I don't think this is an authentic Japanese maker. It looks more like a Chinese company pretending to be Japanese to sell well due to Japan's reputation being so good. I've been seeing this a lot more recently.

Search comes up with nothing, the first result isn't even related. The rest of the results are just coming back from the word "Minami" which means South.

      • A garden "steel" that costs under $30 is unlikely to be made in Japan and even if it was, it probably wouldn't matter.
