Beware - Tampered Apple Gift Cards

TL;DR; I bought Apple gift cards from Coles. One of them says invalid. Customer support said it's been redeemed and declined to refund. I requested to escalate the case to higher management and waiting for response.

Update 1: 6/12 5.46pm I just got off the phone with Apple support. The tech support person confirmed that the card was redeemed and the person who redeemed it has used up the amount. They can't tell me when and the location it was redeemed though. They escalated it to another team who can see more information from the transaction to investigate it. They will get back to me by Wed next week.
When I asked why it was redeemed but the message says "Invalid code", they said the message varies, it doesn't necessarily have to say redeemed when it was redeemed!
The tech person also couldn't check if the redemption code and the security code are valid. They can only tell the security code on the envelope and the card are the same which is obvious from photos.

Update 2: 10/12
There are 2 similar cases reported below by @cfritz and @Ozjonno. They found out the last letter on the gift card was modified/rubbed out. Trying with the correct letter worked for them.
I took a deeper look. The last letter on my card was indeed rubbed out. It is a K instead of an I.
Unfortunately, it said already redeemed when I try with the correct letter.

Long story:
I bought 3 Apple gift cards from Coles on 4/12, $500 each. I was well aware of the tampered gift card issue. Therefore, I checked the envelop carefully. It looked pristine, print quality was up to the standard, the seal looked untouched. I compared it with a few other cards, no difference.
I paid and they got activated at the checkout. Didn't open them right at the checkout because I felt I was blocking people. Stepped out, opened and redeemed them.
1 of the gift cards wasn't able to redeem. It said invalid code. I compared the security code on the envelop and on the card, they matched completely, and the inside card didn't look dodgy at all.
I came back in the store right away. The staff didn't do anything except telling me to contact customer support after 24 hours because it could take up to 24 hours to be activated.
Contacted customer support 24 hours later, they told me the card has been redeemed. I requested my case to be escalated and am waiting for their response.
On a side note, the code on the card I got still keeps saying invalid instead of redeemed. One of the security codes on the invalid card continues the ones on the other 2 cards (like D258X and the other cards have D256X and D257X), this made me think these cards were put on the shelf in the order they came from the supplier. If my card was really tampered, I'm really impressed with the attention to details.

At the moment, I'm just going to wait for their reply. However, if they keep saying it's none of their business that the card has been redeemed, who should I escalate this case to?

If the packaging was pristine then maybe the database for the cards has been compromised? Report it directly to Apple.

  • from coles

There was also recently some reports from community members in my local area Facebook group about gift cards purchased from Cole’s that looked pristine , but when they got home, the numbers had all been scratched out so can’t even redeem.

Then obviously when they went back to complain, they were denied under suspicion. Which I guess is fair…

Maybe the only safe thing to do now is to open and redeem on the spot after checkout with a staffer to witness. But even then still have issues.

    • Even if I redeemed it on the spot, the staff could've still said it may take up to 24 hours to be activated. I guess the only thing I could and should've done if it was opened and failed to redeem in front of a staff was to get a witness statement from them.
But I just feel awkward to occupy a staff just to witness me redeeming a bunch of gift cards.

My experience with Apple Gift Cards is that they redeem instantly when it works so up to 24hrs is not really a valid excuse for them to fob you off. The extra receipt that proves the activation is the one that proves the gift card is activated.

That wont help if you got them for a gift, or to pay an ATO debt.

I don't think it's tampered either. There is something very wrong with Apple gift cards at the moment. I've got six cards last time (October), three of them didn't activate (wrong code). I've contacted Apple, they said go to Coles, contacted Coles, they refunded me.
Bought again couple of days ago, all three cards got a mismatched serial numbers and obviously didn't work either. Contacted Apple, still waiting.
I don't think I am gonna buy a physical gift card next time, even with 100x flybuys points.

  • Charge back from bank if you purchased using Credit card.

I considered myself lucky as I have purchased almost $3600 worth of Apple gift cards from BigW and all of them valid.

  • Found this post on google search, chiming in with my situation.

Bought a $100 Apple gift voucher from Coles today. Tried to redeem it right after walking out Coles scanner gates and got the dreaded "Cannot Redeem Code The code entered is not valid." message. I went to the Coles service desk right away and the staff member checked my receipt an noted that as it said "(00)APPROVED" on the receipt, it should be all good and may take up to 24 hours to activate.

Its only been 4 hours since then and i have been trying every 1-2 hours in that time with the same error message. Hopefully they are right and it works tomorrow.

I don't buy apple gift cards much, but the packaging looked all fine. the serial number on the inside of the card also matched up with one that's near the barcode on the main outside packaging too

    • I never had an Apple gift card that wasn't redeemable right after purchase until now. I reckon if if it didn't work, it won't work.
You can contact Apple at 133622 (say you want to buy a new product because the bot won't let you through if you don't). They are available 24/7 and can check if the card has been redeemed or not for you instantly.

      • Hi @Miel, thanks for the tips! I'll try this today

I tried scanning the code (and also tried manual method) just now and its coming up with the same "Cannot Redeem Code The code entered is not valid." message.

    • Just wondering if the card serial numbers match on the sleeve and card itself? It usually starts with GCA.

        yes they did match!

**UPDATE for anyone else that might have this situation occur:

(TLDR, A piece of the letter R was faded and it looked like a P)

Called Apple support and read out the entire serial to them (the really long numerical one under the barcode). They said this card still had !100 on it and wasn't used yet.

I then read out to them my claim code, and they kept asking if any of my numbers could have been read by mistake. Upon taking a closer look the last letter P in the code looked like it had a little smudge next to it that i had overlooked. I said this could also be the letter R.

So i inputting the code manually this time with the letter R (instead of P) and i was able to redeem the voucher.

Heres the pic for anyone interested. https://postimg.cc/mhXVkGKz

    • "May take up to 24 hours to activate" is NOT correct. Activation voucher means it instantly loads and if it doesn't work now, it won't work tomorrow.

If they fob you off, they can later argue you could be the scammer later on.

  • I have a similar situation, all details match to the receipt, gift card and packaging.

After chatting with Apple, I did notice something suspicious on the card. The LAST letter seems to have been CHANGED and scratched out! I tried every combination and was able to redeem it by changing from N to M!

    • further to this, I was only able to redeem 1 of 2 gift cards. Same as OP, they were not able to resolve it and I have escalated it again to Apple. Now adding additional info and photos on the tampered/scam pictures. Hope they're able to resolve this issue

They have mentioned that similar issues should be escalated to them. they can be reached through 1-300-321-456 (Australia) as well.

How strange! I had another look at my card under a torch and at a certain angle, the reflection looks like it was purposely rubbed out. My last letter was R, but a bit was rubbed out to make it look like a P

    • I double checked mine. The last letter was rubbed out indeed. I realised it's a K instead of an I. Unfortunately, after trying again it with the correct letter, now it says it's been redeemed. I tried to change it to a random letter, invalid it is, of course.
