Roaming eSIM with Local Break Out (LBO)

Anyone know of a roaming eSIM with LBO?

Usually data is routed back via the sims country, LBO routes via the roaming providers network. Haven’t found one that utilises this yet but the technology has existed years.

Reduces ping to local pings, instead of potentially in the hundreds

Interesting. I didn't even know that an eSIM usually routes data back to country of origin. Seems pretty inefficient.

    • On the otherhand it breaks through the Great Wall of China so you can access Gmail and YouTube.

It’s extremely inefficient, I get 450ms ping in the UK on Felix.

End up needing a local sim anyway and just having the roaming sim to keep number available

  • Reduces ping to local pings, instead of potentially in the hundreds

Isn't 5G supposed to solve this? Unless if you get 4G only for the esim

    • Does it solve the LBO issue?

5G is generally lower ping, not sure about it solving local break out issues though. I did my degree before 5G was a big thing though so not sure

      • I don't know about LBO and I haven't tried esim overseas yet.

        There are 2 different 5G:
        * 5G on top of 4G network (most people use this if they have 5G devices)
        * True 5G network. Need devices that support mmWave. The problem is the short range/coverage.

I am referring to the True 5G network. I don't have devices that support mmWave yet.

        • 5G SA may have LBO built in, but I don’t think 5G NSA does (ping was still high so I assume not)

Haven’t actually come across any 5G SA signal spots yet tbh

Apparently LBO is difficult as you need the roaming provider to manage billing and controls for you, so an extra agreement and service is required.
