Kogan Food Dehydrator for Jerky Making

I am interested in making jerky. Was looking at this product from Kogan but not sure how good it is.

Has anybody any recommendations on this or any ither brand that should look at instead?

  • I've made lots of jerky in dehydrators - I can't see why this one wouldn't be great (I've never had issues with any).

They are so simple it'd hard to make a bad one.

Well, the Jerk Store called, and……..’

    • and?

What's the point? You're their all time bestseller

  • oooh interesting hobby! I can't imagine you going wrong with this. My understanding is that all dehydrators sort of function the same but perhaps there is a product review page where people have rated their experiences with it?

I'm not familiar with them but I am sure they are around if you look around

  • I use a different kogan cheapy with no issues, the shelves come out for cleaning on mine (not sure if this one does) which is the hardest step

If you're just giving it ago, get a kmart one - $55. I have this and make jerky all the time with it.

It's only jerky if it's from the smoked area of dehydration, otherwise it's just sparkling biltong

  • Biltong is much better anyway and you don't need a dehydrator to make it.

The option you are proposing seems very expensive, and potentially problematic re cleaning. If you are just starting out, get something like the $55 thing alluded to above by Clive. What you want if you are going to try making your own jerky, is 'tiers/shelves' that can be washed in a DISHWASHER.

If you subsequently get 'serious'/decide that you really enjoy making jerky, you can explore other options (such as those involving 'building up').

A few words of advice though:

    1. Realise that for every kilo of meat you buy to 'jerkify', you will only get 200 grams of actual jerky, or less. Factor that into your cost analysis.
    2. It takes a lot of electricity to make beef jerky, because the machine needs to run for many hours, and essentially is a small electric heater. If you have solar/a battery, OK. If you don't, it might be cheaper for you to just BUY your jerky.
    3. I've made jerky with meat from cows, deer, roos, and camels, all with great results. It can be an extremely rewarding hobby; but unless you know someone with a license to hunt deer, or you are a cow farmer, you will not save any money by making your own jerky.
    4. I note that you live in Victoria; where deer are currently destroying the native landscape at an alarming rate …

I suggest that you partner with a licenced deer hunter, and start creating large amounts of 'venison jerky'. You would be hailed an environmental hero. I also suggest that if you take this route, you send me some of your venison jerky. PM me for my address ;)

    • Thank you very much. This was the most helpful answer I ever got on any forum on any topic.
Thank you once again, dear sir.
