Best Haggled Price on Hybrid New 2024 Toyota RAV4 / GWM Haval H6

Hi fellows!

My mate looking to get a new car, and I’m hoping someone out there who had recently purchased either hybrid Toyota RAV4 or hybrid GWM Haval H6.

What are your best negotiated prices? We went the other day and asking for a $2000 off and it was not enticing for the dealer at all. I mean back in the days we would haggle $5k off like a Toyota Camry. Are their margin really that small nowadays?

Are their margin really that small nowadays?

Yes. And you wouldn't have haggled $5k off a Camry, they were generally always on special so RRP was meaningless

RAV4s are flying out the door now that wait times have reduced, and if you don't show commitment etc they'll just show you the door, especially if your offer is stupid

    • would it not be cheaper if they price stock as being imported as opposed to having stock locally?

      • Not sure what you're getting at?

Pre-2017 or so all/most of the car makers had a certain RRP but they never sold their vehicles for that, instead forever pricing them on special. $38,990 d/a Commodore SV6's, $24,990 Camry's, etc etc. These all had RRP's far above that. Those sales ended once local production ended, and RRP's were brought down instead but with no sales, just slimmer margins.

In 2017, a Camry Altise had an RRP of $26,490 + ORC (dealer delivery, stamp duty, registration) yet was on special for $24,990 d/away. This wasn't haggling, this was an advertised special. Oh, and at 0% finance over 4 years.

        Yes, those were the days!

they'll just show you the door,

If they did that to me while car shopping with my son I would be mortified.

      • +3

Well they need to show you the door… and the other doors, and the bonut

This is a useless post as every dealer will see things differently

It depends on what the dealers have in stock and whats coming but not committed.

Also AUD against USD is coming down hard at the moment so exchange rate is working against the dealers.

Also why should OP be getting involved at all ?

Leave it up to your mate to ask and maybe look after your own affairs

Better off going for free inclusions…

full tank of fuel and "premium" floor mats as a minimum

I overheard someone at the dealership negotiating 25% off a Rav 4 the other day… 4 months down to 3👍

    • Not for a hybrid I’m thinking. That’s 1-2 years I hear.

      • I thought they were referring on the wait time to join the purchasing queue…

        • +3

Join the back of the far que.

      • Pretty sure it was for a hybrid .. salesman did them a solid and prefilled all the options and colour choice for them 🤔

      • +3

They don't sell a straight ICE one any more

          Yo VIP, let's kick it
          Ice, ice baby
          Ice, ice baby…

        • don't sell a straight ICE one

          What do the identify as?

    • Friend took delivery of a Hybrid Rav 4 earlier this year and is moving O/S for work so listed it for sale. People were offering him over his asking price. He even had a call from the dealership he bought it from asking them to sell it back to them

      • Is this still available?

        • +4

sorry, sold it to someone working at the mines. He's organised for his nephew to come and pick it up

          • +1

@87percent: Wasn't he working in a ship and his cousin was in town for the pickup? Did he pay with giftcards?

            • +7

@Naigrabzo: no, he paid via PayID (he showed me the screenshot), but said it can take a few days to hit my account. They're picking it up tomorrow, so should be ok

          • @87percent: had to pay via paypal

  • Currently waiting for the Haval H6 GT PHEV… on paper it looks quite promising.

    • 4.9s 0-100, finally living up to its name and looks.
      180km electric range

      Proper hot SUV numbers that.

      • This is the first chinese SUV that looks proper mean… and bloody quicker than my SSV Redline Ute, and can fit a family, probably V2G technology as well. For $56,000 drive away holy man

If you are prepared to do a lot of work, im sure you can get $3-4k off. Just gotta go in with the right attitude and youll win over the salesperson every time.

  • A bit of luck comes into play. We were given the usual free inclusions and just under $2k off the RRP on a Corolla, just for insisting we wanted to test drive a few other cars across the street at Suzuki before making any decision. It wasn't much but it's better than nothing. I high doubt I was ready to pay 40k for a Jimny at the time, anyway.

When was this and for what spec? Just as a data point, I barely got $100 off my Corolla early 2023, however mine's the top-spec hybrid sedan. Only managed to get a free bootliner.

      • +1

It was July this year. I ordered a base hybrid Corolla hatch in a fun color. They initially quoted me a 12 month ETA, but it ended up being just 3 months. I think my luck was partly because they knew I could've driven off with a different small car from another dealer that same week if I’d walked out the door. Maybe they also needed to hit their KPIs for the month.

      • +1

Also, great choice going for the top spec. I absolutely love my car, but I can’t stand the awful alloys on the lower-spec Corollas. When it’s time for new tyres, I’ll be out of pocket around $2k to switch out the rims. I should’ve just paid the extra $5k or so upfront and enjoyed all the extra luxuries from the start.

  • Honestly i can't understand who'd buy a Rav4 when its effectively a 6 year old design.

At least the Haval is only part way through its design lifecycle.

Get the Haval, 7 year warranty, better fitout, no waitlist.

    Simples.

    • People who don't want Chinese junk?

      • Haval isnt mg

    • what's better about the fitout?

Rav4 had a refresh so at least the screen is better than it was

      • H6 by far.

        • what's better about its fitout?

    • +1

People who want some semblance of resale?

  • Appreciate all your feedback guys! We end up with RAV4 GX Hybrid with paint and full size spare tire add on. Bargaining from $48,031 to $46,500.

I would say you could get away with $46,000 as other dealership called an hour after our purchase and said “they would have done a better price”.

Good luck with your haggling skills!

Its easy for them to say that when youve committed elsewhere. Why didnt they offer a better price earlier?

      • Its easy for them to say that when youve committed elsewhere. Why didnt they offer a better price earlier?

It's a technique to either a) get them to come back to you, or b) it's a spiteful response to attempt to leave a sour feeling about your purchase

Generally speaking, it's a dick response (despite what my responders here allude to, I don't side with everything that every salesperson says!)

    • Any chance the dealers are in NSW? or the dealer you went with in the end?
