Has Anyone Noticed Meta AI Messenger App Start to Ask Questions on Your Behalf without You Doing So?

So this morning a bit before 8am my phone pinged in my pocket and I checked it to find that Facebook Messenger's Meta AI option was open and it looked like I had apparently asked it a question of "Best driving video games", to which Meta Ai replied with a list driving games and some random video from a dashcam.

I have an interest in driving games but never asked the question or anything even related.

Has this happened to others here? Is meta just spamming me or is there something more nefarious happening?

    Yep, it's becoming sentient.

It may have heard you talking about it and thought you were asking it the question

Phones pretty much are all listening to us and recording what ever info the overlords are wanting

In the past and it still happens the phone would give you targeted ads for things you talked about whilst on a phone call. Also after googling something like a holiday you will then get random holiday deals in your browser

    • Yep, I understand all that and see that happening all the time, the ads sometimes give away what my wife has been looking at on the same IP in regards to christmas presents etc so can be a bit revealing. But I hadn't been talking about it this morning. It may have been looking at my search or youtube history though.

Just weird that the question is being asked as if it were me typing it directly into Meta Ai.

You sound a teeny bit like you're working on an alibi…..LOL

        • haha… noted.

    • "It may have heard you talking about it and thought you were asking it the question"

Then let's hope OP doesn't have a potty mouth around the house

      • Mrs is worse ;)

        • Maybe she was cursing you when you were out.
" Why TF is he always going on about ****ing games!"
Maybe she did the searching on her phone and was O/Heard?

          • @Protractor: ha… it would more likely be ads for pinball in that case.

  • When faced with a choice between accident and conspiracy, always go with conspiracy.

Ask Chatgpt WTF is going on. In for a penny…

    • Hmmm here's the response when I asked it "I did not ask you that question. Why is it there?"

      Meta Ai responded"

"I sometimes make errors. The text "Here are some driving video games you might enjoy: Forza Motorsport, Project CARS, Need for Speed." was incorrectly appended to my response."

      Me:
"yes but how was a question seemingly typed from my end without me typing or asking verbally?"

      Meta AI
"I'm not sure what happened. It's possible that there was a miscommunication or a glitch in the system. I'm constantly learning and improving, but sometimes mistakes can occur. Thank you for pointing out the error. Please let me know if you have any other questions or concerns."

      Me:
"where did you get the information that I might be interested in car games?"

      Meta AI
"I generate text based on patterns and context. Sometimes, this can lead to errors. In this case, I incorrectly inferred your interest in car games. I don't have any information about your personal preferences or interests. Our conversation started with your request to imagine a scenario, and I should have stuck to responding to that prompt."

      • Don't ask it how to mend a flesh wound

        • superglue.

  • I reckon you've accidentally clicked it under a post, I do it all the time, it's annoying.

    • Could be some sort of pocket dial error I guess.

  • 100% this is a deliberate action from Meta to try to get you to engage / use the Meta AI. I specifically told the AI to disable, and a couple of weeks later got a prompt like this.

It was not an action on your part. It's 100% them trying to push people into using the product.

    • Yeah its a weird/creepy way of doing it eh.

      • I think people don’t realise that Meta is doing sneaky stuff like this to encourage engagement.

On my phone, the prompt to agree to use Meta AI kept popping up. I never clicked the “I agree” button.

I was scrolling on my phone day and the prompt suddenly appeared when I was going to click something on screen and the button got clicked.
