Go to a horticulture shop or nursery and buy some suitable size Aussie made tree planter bags.UV stable, strong as , can carry a LOT.
Usually have 2 HD handles. Last ones you'll ever buy.
Jute is a good strong material for shopping bags: https://www.biome.com.au/products/real-green-bag-made-from-j…
Only downside is it isn't very foldable like plain cotton bags, or the part recycled plastic ones the supermarkets sell.
IKEA bag for the dry goods and Costco cooler bag for the cold ones.
If you are travelling abroad, I've found really good options for euro or two in co-op and lidl shops. Also in Asia. Made from the strong polyester, but twice the size of the green or black ones.
Good souvenirs too, as it makes me remember my trip every time I use one.
I get years out of the nylon packable bags from woolies. Easy to throw in the washing machine and strong as.
"which can be used for a couple of years?"
don't colesworth still do those reuseable bags (like the woolies 'bag for good' version?). we've got some of those that are 15 odd years old that have a real estate agency plastered all over them (they were free promotional ones)
.
I have Coles calico bags from the late 90s / early 2000s that are still going strong. They're annoying to use in one sense because they don't stand upright so you have to hold them open while packing your groceries.
Also have Coles woven bags (like the Woolies green bags) that are around 10 years old, no issues.
My favourite though is a large hessian bag from New World supermarket in Whakatane, New Zealand. Strong, sturdy and bigger than the other bags.
Woolies. The key is not to overload them.
I have found these woolies ones to be slightly better. They have two different length handles which is also helpful.
