Picked up a click & collect order today from Sydney Tools.
They asked for photo ID which is of course normal - but the salesman took my opened wallet (with driver's license showing through window), put it next to his keyboard, and proceeded to enter my driver's licence number into their system.
First of all, I was showing my photo ID for the purposes of them cross-checking the order details, NOT consenting to further details being recorded.
Secondly, considering there's a non-zero risk of their database being compromised at some time in the future, I'd much prefer there to be as little information there to be potentially compromised as possible.
Thirdly, if you're gonna commence data entry in this manner - against industry norms - ask me first!
No other stores have done this, including other large franchises and much higher value orders. This makes me question whether it's actually necessary. After all, it's not a duty-free store!
If Sydney Tools consider the provision of this information essential for the transaction, then make it an input field at the time of the order. E.g. an input field for the driver's licence number (or Passport number) of the photo ID being used for collection.
I asked to see the policy for doing this, and it took them some time to find a page which said something like they need a copy of the credit card and photo ID - but this not the same as appears on https://sydneytools.com.au/p/click-collect-terms-conditions
did you complain at the time?
