Sydney Tools Click & Collect - Data Collection

Picked up a click & collect order today from Sydney Tools.

They asked for photo ID which is of course normal - but the salesman took my opened wallet (with driver's license showing through window), put it next to his keyboard, and proceeded to enter my driver's licence number into their system.

First of all, I was showing my photo ID for the purposes of them cross-checking the order details, NOT consenting to further details being recorded.
Secondly, considering there's a non-zero risk of their database being compromised at some time in the future, I'd much prefer there to be as little information there to be potentially compromised as possible.
Thirdly, if you're gonna commence data entry in this manner - against industry norms - ask me first!

No other stores have done this, including other large franchises and much higher value orders. This makes me question whether it's actually necessary. After all, it's not a duty-free store!

If Sydney Tools consider the provision of this information essential for the transaction, then make it an input field at the time of the order. E.g. an input field for the driver's licence number (or Passport number) of the photo ID being used for collection.

I asked to see the policy for doing this, and it took them some time to find a page which said something like they need a copy of the credit card and photo ID - but this not the same as appears on https://sydneytools.com.au/p/click-collect-terms-conditions

  • did you complain at the time?

Absolutely! It got a bit heated. They said it was their policy and I asked them to show it to me. As mentioned above, they eventually showed me a page on their screen that said something like they need a copy of the credit card used for the order and photo ID. I have not yet found that wording in the public domain.
They offered a refund, but who knows whether that would have also resulted in permanent deletion of the details from their system - highly doubt it.

Email head office and demand they remove all your details and data, and send an email to ptove it/confirm. cc the ACMA and ACCC in this email. Then learn to buy physically in store. To me Sydney tools website looks way too much like the porous loose security Total Tools. Let that guide you.

That said, our identification and data is so wide spread now it's a joke.Even govt sites are lax to the point of nose bleed.
        Was this an expensive item?

        • Yep, will be sending that email (requesting data deletion) - not like I'll be shopping there again without cash.
It was just over $300 worth of Makita stuff, from a deal posted here.

could have asked i guess… but yeah seems a bit much.

Was such a pain in the ass last when optus had their leak, the line at dept of transport for re-issue of license literally went out the door and circled around the whole complex.

  • Autobarn do the same in my experience.

one more reason to shop at sca

Not sure if it's nationwide but my local sca staple a mentos to the invoice for click and collect.

100% of the time I now do click and collect just for my free mentos.

+1 for the free mentos at Brookvale (but sometimes it's fruit, yuck).

@Donald McRonald: It's always fruit at mine. Gives me something to chew on the way to Bunnings over the road.

  • Very rough that they didn't ask and didn't explain.

I can understand why a policy like this might have been made though - fraudulent pickups of multi-thousand dollar power tool orders… paid via paypal or some method where they can't "sight the credit card that was used to pay". They could however, only require it on large orders (over $500) and even then, delete it after the 'chargeback period' has expired.

I really don't like businesses storing my ID but in very rare cases, they might need to for a short period of time.

What if they had a photographic memory and entered the data after you left?

    • +5

The combined probability of this and of them having a data breach would be acceptable to me.

One more reason to shop in person and with cash.

    • +1

With the banks, the government, the corporations, and all their simps wanting to get rid of cash that’s unlikely going to be a viable option in the future.

      • +1

I think we should just get rid of any type of currency altogether and make everything free

It will make everything more efficient.

Yes, the same happened to me on the weekend at Total Tools. Just started writing down my DL number with no explanation. Who knows how these hard copy records are being stored.

    • What happens if you don't have a drivers licence?

      • That's what I asked when I was arguing with them this morning. They need a form of photo ID, so if you bring your passport instead, they said they'd record your passport number!

        • What happens if you don't have a passport?

    • …as per the covid era data….

I did a click and collect from Sydney Tools last week. They didn't ask to see my ID at all. Before leaving the desk with my item, I offered to show it but the response was "You have the order number and email - that is good enough".

  • I have done several click and collects but not for a few months. Only ever needed order number and email or description of what I had ordered.

  • My last click and collect from North Lakes in Qld. required my mobile number only.

  • They were insisting it was policy from above. First of all I was told it was for my protection (against what scenario, I'm not sure), then later on the store manager said it was for their protection (I guess from accusations of supplying to the wrong person).
You guys who haven't yet provided your DL number should probably do so for more protection!! (/sarcasm).
