Has Anyone Been Charged a Foreign CC Fee or Exchange Fee When Purchasing Quest 3 from Meta Recently?

Just wondering if anyone has been hit up with a foreign surcharge recently when buying a Quest 3 directly through Meta? It happened to me a few years back when buying Quest 2 even though they advertised in AU$.

I have heard that the bank will sometimes refund if you dispute it.

    Stop banking with westpac?

    • Most the banks charge a foreign exchange fee.

If it’s charged in AUD, AMEX doesn’t have a fee

        • Oh that sounds good, I think the wife has an AMEX card, might give that a try.

    • I'm not with westpac but it's possible my building society has westpac in the upstream.

  • If the credit card is processed offshore there will be a foreign surcharge even if made initially in Australian dollars

International transactions are transactions where the merchant, financial institution, or entity processing the transaction is located outside Australia.

    • Yeah I am aware of why it happens as went through it a couple of years ago. Just wondering if it is still the case when purchasing through Meta and looking for some recent experiences of others who have done so.

I'm also wondering what other people have said to their bank in order to get the fee refunded (lack of transparency of a possible charge during sale etc??)

I purchased one a few days ago, it comes up as Meta Ireland. But it was charged in AUD. I used PayPal though

    • Thanks, I was not intending to use paypal but could be an option if others say they are getting hit with a fee.

  • Buy from Amazon Australia. Usually it gets delivered quicker than buying from Meta directly.

    • That was my original plan but I'm eligible for a $150 meta gift card if buying direct from meta (not available via amazon purchase). Swings and roundabouts it seems.

      • how are you getting $150 gift card? I know the referral program is like $90 or something atm?

  • Used to get hit with it for games until I noticed it in my statement. Now I just PayPal to avoid it.

Banks just making more money from us having to use companies who also want to make more money by processing offshore. It’s great!

Meta have delivered really fast to me and I’m not in a metro area. Their support has actually been really good too.

Doesn't PayPal have horrible currency exchange rates? So it's the same price using credit card or payPal?

  • Ended up using Bendigo Bank mastercard and no foreign fee charge when buying through Meta. Only took about 48 hours to deliver to regional NSW too.
