Cashrewards and IHG - Deceptive Behavior for Activating Cash Back

Good morning all,

Just wanted to see if anyone has any experience with Cash Rewards and IHG hotels and getting cash back approved.

As part of Black Friday sale, I saw there was a 10% cash back on IHG hotels so I clicked through the link to IHG and booked my holiday to Queenstown. I received confirmation that it was tracked, all good. What I did notice was the link that Cash Rewards uses to send you to IHG's website automatically prepopulates a travel agent code input into your search and there is a toggle that is applied saying "Are you a travel agent?" which is automatically set to "Yes".

I didn't think too much of this as I had clicked through directly from Cash Rewards and thought it must be there for a reason but as it was a large amount of cash back, I did contact their support.

I was advised on their terms and conditions that

"Cash back is ineligible for Travel agents and/or agencies with an existing or active partnership with IHG Hotels & Resorts outside of the PartnerConnect affiliate program."

and therefore my cash back would be denied.

I explained to them and showed screen shots that their link is prepopulating this code and that they are setting people up to fail. I am awaiting a response on why they are using a link that will automatically disqualify cash back but in the mean time, has anyone had any issues with IHG confirming cash back?

Are cash rewards and IHG being deceptive?
Should I not be challenging this?
Should I be reporting them for false advertising?

Any feedback would be appreciated.

Cheers

  • I noticed the same when clicking through TCB to also utilise CR's rate but for TCB's Highest Cashback Guarantee. However, my cashback tracked just fine, and the amount has already been uplifted, beating CR's, so I'd assume the "travel agent code" is something tied to the cashback companies. At least, that's my view anyway.

    • That was my first assumption as well, the travel agent code is to identify it as a Cash Rewards transaction, hence why I was reluctant to remove it. Thanks for the feedback

      • It seems to be the same through Topcashback as well, and the code is the same

  • Fk this is not good. I have a booking in Jan

  • An update from Cash Rewards on this matter

    "Hi xxxx,

I hope you are well. Thanks for reaching out to the team at Cashrewards.

I've raised this with my team for you and they have confirmed the discount offered for Travel Agents that is automatically selected IHG will be eligible for cashback. I just want to apologies for providing incorrect information to you before, I was unaware this automatically selected code would be eligible for cashback.

Really sorry for my confusion regarding this offer. Please let me know if there is anything else I can do for you.

    Have a lovely day.

    Cheers,"
