Pretty good game, got a lot of awards recently.

It's a bit of an internet darling.

It's fun, typical deck-building game where you make poker hands with wild joker modifiers.

Hours will go by and you won't realise it.

Balatro is a poker-inspired roguelike deck builder all about creating powerful synergies and winning big. The poker roguelike. Balatro is a hypnotically satisfying deckbuilder where you play illegal poker hands, discover game-changing jokers, and trigger adrenaline-pumping, outrageous combos.

Gonna clean up at the game awards

Same price at EB Games for PS5 and Switch versions.

    • Aww dammit, I just got it on the eShop recently. (Haven't played it yet though)

Ah a game now for gambling addicts

    • +6

No wonder it was rated R18+ because it simulates a casino and is NOT encouraging gambling with real money.

      • i was hope it was R18+ like strip poker

        • It's related to the new ACB laws regarding lootboxes and gambling in games.
It's just REALLY stupid that lootboxes are rated LOWER than simulated gambling, when arguably it should be the opposite, since simulated gambling often doesn't have an option for inserting real-world money into the game.

    • As opposed to all those gatcha games, or anything with a loot crate

FYI this has been ported to Portmaster so most retro handhelds can plays this (not that I personally have any interest in it).

Man I was playing this game non stop once it got released I wasn’t working then and I would literally open my eyes and get to playing it and do the same thing at night .. so glad I got rid of my addiction lol

    • Is it a "good" addiction game where you feel like you've achieved something worthy or a "bad" addiction where you feel like you've wasted your life? (Note: I have over 1000 hours in Dota 2 which I now consider a waste of time).

      • +2

Both sound like bad addictions to me. If it just leaves you feeling like you’ve achieved something but actually haven’t and you burnt a bunch of time, it’s the same result.

Video games should be for enjoyment. If they start feeling like work that needs to be done, I see that as a problem

      • I mean it’s a very fun game but definitely not the “good” type of addiction you’re talking about .. never felt this with any game I ever played

Me: oh nice 1:50 am, I can fit in a quick 10 min game of balatro before sleep for 4 hours and wake up refreshed and ready to tackle the work day.

    Me at 6am: oh nooooooo

      • +3

        Dude wtf

        • Ooof! so, so many negs - wow lol.
All good anyways. Take it easy mates.

Playing this game takes your mind off things until you realise how much time has passed, then remember why you played it in the first place (i.e to take your mind off things for a bit)

  • +2

I play it casually but don't rate it as much as many of the ozb community. I think it's not worth it. Just buy it on your mobile for $15 and try.

It's fun but it's just souped up Poker to me. I don't get the hype.

So the physical edition comes with some physical cards as well?
Otherwise the digital editions switch/ps are reasonably cheaper ($21 and $17.95) - even as a default price

You can resell a physical copy right?

      • you also can't have it taken away when it's rights change over, content is found that they don't want out there, they decide something isn't pc or a dev gets cancelled.

Just buy Dave the diver, you get to dive, fish, farm, run a restaurant, seahorse racing and then play this too.

    • I love Dave the diver!

This game is like cigarettes. One round is too many, and a million is not enough.

  • +2

If you don’t love your kids download this.

  • I've been afraid of trying this game

  • 18$ on the PSstore any real upside to getting this other than getting a physical copy?

  • +1

Out of the loop here who has only heard about this game for most of the year since it's release; I can't imagine it's a great game to play on a non-handheld platform though right?
Like wouldn't Steamdeck/Switch be the go? Man I wish this had a demo or something so I could seemingly lose sleep and generate an addiction like so many testimonials are claiming 😅

If you have an android just download the APK and play it and it you like it purchase it. That's what I did and loved it and now have it on phone, PC and PS5 haha

    • +1

I've got a cartoonish amount of hours on PC, and that's been just fine. I tend to play it while I'm listening to a pod or a show as a dual wield for my ADHD. I probably wouldn't want it for PS5 though, because there'd no benefit to playing it on a big screen.

  • Warning very addictive game. It’s the only game I play on Apple Arcade.

  • +5

Pretty good game doesn't give this justice.

This is game of the year for many. So well designed and an absolutely brilliant fun game.

  • +8

Perfect for mobile. Not sure if I wanna play this Infront of a TV

    • Agree 100%

I bought on mobile to try it and it's been great.

  • +4

Great game but it’s better to play on handheld.

  • +3

It's on Android and iPhone now. I got it for $15… Not sure the differences would be worth the money.

    • The game is great on Android. Touch is intuitive, and you can resume your game even if the OS kills your game in between your morning and evening commute.

  • +2

This game is $17.95 on PSN store. Yeah I see you get some cards with the physical copy. A small sized game like this makes it very accessible by when it's digital instead of getting the disc each time you want to play. Maybe a physical copy is better seeing how addictive it is.

Friends don't let friends play Balatro

WARNING: Sitting on the toilet playing Balatro for a long period of time can cause pins and needles in your feet.

    • Do you have a PS5 in your toilet?

      • +1

        Lol valid. Switch.

  • +1

Killer game but I wouldn't play it on a TV. I sunk a few dozen hours into it on my phone with a hacked Android app before it officially released then I bought it and sunk another few dozen hours into it. A physical game disk on console seems like a great collector's item but less good to actually play.

  • This game is amazing. Highly recommend to anyone. I was hesitant to buy as it was my first "deck building" game and I wasn't sure if I would like it, now 60 hours later, I can't stop! GOTY

  • +1

Balatro's success genuinely baffles me. I bought Balatro in February before the hype hit and I am dead center in the theoretical target market: Roguelike, Deck builder and Poker player and it bored me to tears. There was never came a point I felt like I was had to make anything but the most rudimentary analyses of what happened to be on offer and very little agency is offered at all. This isn't like Slay the Spire where you can squeeze out a win with disciplined drafting and tactical pathing you just get what you get and I found it boring even when winning with large numbers on screen. I would not get this if you have a low threshold for repetition when not actively improving at or being challenged by something.

    • +1

Completely agree. Vampire survivors on the other hand . I definitely had a problem

      • Oh yeah, VS has jams.

  • I bought this on Steam because I'd heard good things. Started playing it and was like "oh it's literally just a card game".

I'm now 50 hours in and will consistently play at least one run a night. Only have one deck left to complete then will go through each difficulty. It gets really difficult on the harder difficulties.

Side note, my partner thought I was playing online poker and was worried I was gambling away our savings. Had to explain it's fake money and just a game lol

  • Not sure a console is the best platform to play it but still a good deal.

Thanks OP, I was bit light on work this afternoon so thought I'd have a game of it. Opened it up on the PC….. 4 hours later….. well that was a productive afternoon.
