New Laptop for Uni Student - Budget $1,000

Hi all, laptop for uni has carked it and need to find a new one with a budget of hopefully under $1k.

Know nothing really about computers but don’t use it for anything aside from word/ excel, streaming and some light gaming. A Ryzen / intel 7 would be nice and probably 16gb ram.

Seen eBay have some 20% refurb deals going on, wondering if any of these are good buys? Also not sure if this is a good seller. Any recommendation or advice would be appreciated.
Cheers

To have been accepted into University you would have been using a notebook computer all the way through secondary school. So what degree could you possibly now be undertaking where your assumed knowledge doesn't include the ability to source computer hardware and applications applicable to your course?

I’m sorry I don’t really know what you are saying. I’m asking for advice because I’m trying to maximise my budget and I’m not a tech guy. I am not in a course where there are any real intensive programs needed.

You don't need to be a tech guy to purchase a sub $1K Windows notebook

        • Thanks for your amazing help!

          • @Red4: Based on your requirements, I recommend the Lenovo IdeaPad Slim 3i as an excellent laptop for university needs; it offers great value and meets your specifications perfectly. 25% discount ends tonight

MacBook air is a good choice. Long battery life, compact and sturdy construction.

    • ~33% above budget though :/

Unless OP finds either a heavily discounted M1 or a second-hand one.

      • +1

Plenty of second hand M1 airs for under 1000

I just sold an M1 macbook pro for $750

recommend for the battery life alone

I would prefer a windows laptop if possible, think they provide better value

    Used ThinkPad T14 gen 2

    • Second this, really nice machine

    • Thank you, is eBay best for this? And what kind of specs should I be looking at?

  • Not sure how much uni has changed since I was there….but make sure you get something with amazing battery life, if I was doing uni again I would rank battery life and portability above performance.

I still remember when reaching past midday and then you get to the lecture room that only has like 3 accessible outlets, all already in use.

I do remember in my later years new lecture rooms were installing many more outlets, but not sure if that was happening across all unis

  • I have some recommendations in another recent laptop post 500 bucks

  • How old is the laptop that carked it, m8?

    • It is a 2020 ASUS vivobook, it actually got water damaged and has a broken hinge + cracked screen, I’m not sure if it is worth repairing or not since I was quoted $400 just for the hinge and screen. Won’t even start up anymore. Really annoying as it was a great machine, has a newer i7 processor.

  • Get a Chromebook and use Google docs.

That way you will always know where everything is (and never lose any work) and can simply access wherever you are on whatever device including your phone; just with your Gmail account.

    Cheaply.

(You are most likely skilled up on the ecosystem if you went to a government school).

  • I guess, as a uni student you woudn't want to carry a large size laptop.
This one looks good for $919. And it's new.
