JB Hi-Fi - Extra Care on $1,500 Laptop

Hi, planning to buy a $1,500 Lenovo from JB Hi-Fi and they have $250 add-on for extra care to 5 years.

Has anyone had any claim experience with JB Hi-Fi version of "warranty"?

Highly likely I will have issues over a 5 year period. Just wanted to check how's the claim process.

An extended warranty is a waste of money

You’re guaranteed an easy repair (or replacement if it can’t be repaired) for that extra money. I think it’s worth it especially if you know that it’s going to have troubles lol (gaming laptop i’m guessing?)

Just know that you are covered for a minimum of 2 years at JB regardless of manufacturer warranty.

The extra care process is really simple and easy.

My analogy for “extended warranty is a scam” is having car insurance vs having to chase up someone in court for months and months with hours of your time and phone calls over being hit by someone without insurance.

    • Thanks mate, really good information.

It's not a gaming laptop, but I will be lucky to get 5 years of a laptop at my usage.

Your analogy is spot on. If I can just walk to JB and have someone make a call or do the run around, that's worth it.

      • I’ll just let you know also, the claim process for EC involves calling up a company (square trade) and lodging a claim (or doing it online), so not in store. But still just one online claim to make, or one call. Your details and the product are all saved automatically after providing your details when purchasing it so it isn’t hard at all.

    • @despavr - does JB do negotiation on Extra Care? or is it always fixed price, it was coming to $258 odd for 5 total (2 + 3) years.

      • Extra care is automatically applied at 20% of the products cost. If you are after extra care, they’ll have to change the price of the laptop. Let them know you’re interested in the EC and they can probably do a better deal. If you have any questions just let me know

Does the extended warranty cover accidental damage? if so, it may be of value.
From past experience with buying a similar valued laptop for my grand daughter, I took out extended warranty (that covered accidental damage), through JB. She dropped the laptop and broke the screen, hinge and part of the case. Took it back to JB, they replaced the laptop on the spot - VERY HAPPY

**Remember, we have consumer protection in Australia, a $1500 laptop should last at least 5 years, therefore you should not need extended warranty for manufacturer faults.

    • On the topic of accidental damage, check out if your credit card has merchandise protection too , and if it does ensure to check all the hoops you need to hop through and see if it will work for you. Eg my old Amex card has phone protection - when my misso dropper her new Samsung Galaxy flagship phone I looked into it and the claim process was kind of annoying in the way of getting a formal quote from repairer, but all the places I could find wanted hundreds of dollars for a formal quote.

Read the conditions, it must NOT cover what is already covered under ACL. It must provide services in addition to ACL.

  • Not worth it, not for a $1,500 laptop. You get 2 years warranty with it, if it doesn't break in that first 2 years it'll likely last the remaining years anyway.

  • Purely commission building shill.

I had to go through an extended warranty once was an absolute PITA. Basically got the run around for 3 months and they never even sent off the laptop (JBHifi)

Turns out it was all covered under ACL anyway after the factory warranty ran out and went straight to the manufacturer and they sorted it out (new Mobo after the factory one was corrupted). Although it was a HP and i think they ran hot and cooked themselves on the daily.

  • Lol this whole extra care nonsense is a rort.

I'd rather spend that $250 on kfc personally.
