D-Link DWL-G730AP Pocket Router - $25

220

I purchased one of these for $75 earlier this year and have been using it on my XBOX 360 as a wireless bridge. Works very well after a few teething moments during setup. Beats paying over $100 for the official XBOX version. For $25 each I went and picked up 2 today, one for my old XBOX and one for a mate for Christmas.

The Wireless Pocket Router/AP might be small in size, but is huge in functionality. The DWL-G730AP supports multiple operation modes including: Access Point (AP) mode to create a wireless connection; Router mode to share an Internet connection; and Wireless Client mode to connect an existing wireless network. Easily switch between these modes by using the 3-way configuration switch located at the bottom.

In AP mode, the DWL-G730AP can be used to create a wireless network in a room where a single Ethernet port is provided. Now multiple wireless clients can connect to the network at the same time to share resources and files.

In Router mode, the DWL-G730AP can be used to share a single broadband Internet connection, such as in a hotel room. The internal DHCP server automatically assigns IP addresses to ensure everyone in the room can connect to the Internet. In addition, the DWL-G730AP supports VPN Pass-through and firewall features including Network Address Translation (NAT) and MAC filtering to protect your wireless network from malicious attacks.

  • How did you manage to pay $75 if the page says the retail price is $54?

  • I paid $75 from another retailer.

If you have a look at the below link to the same retailer the RRP is close to $100. The link I have is for a bunch of clearance items.

  • Thats a bargain

  • Does anyone know if this could be used to share a network printer in an office for 5-6 laptop users? (The printer already has a built-in print server). Great spotting btw!

  • Sounds like a great gadget. I can't find whether this store delivers outside of Qld though - have sent an email to them…

  • It looks like it cannot support WPA2, probably why it is being dumped.

I would be interested if it does in fact support WPA2 fully and even better if it could be used as a proper bridge, allowing a number of wired connections behind it via an attached switch. The bridge mode has to connect to an existing wireless network and then bridge it so that any number of machines can connect to an attached switch using plain old Ethernet without NAT getting in the way.

The old DWL-810+ used to be able to be used as a true bridge, but newer equipment didn't have this capability, and what's more the DWL-G810 doesn't do WPA2 either!

    • In regards to WPA2, here is the logs from my Billion gateway router after I restarted the G730AP. Forgot to mention that I had upgraded the firmware.

      Dec 15 05:38:16 home.gateway:rt61apRxPacketProc:none: 00:13:46:::* associated
      Dec 15 05:38:22 home.gateway:rt61apRxPacketProc:none: 00:13:46:::* WPA2 4-way pairwisekey handshake ok.

First link in google talks about the firmware including supported for WPA2 :).

      • Thanks, but it now looks like they have run out of stock. It certainly was a very good offer after all!

  • Does anyone know if it supports dd-wrt?? Cant seem to find this exact model on their supported list wiki :(

  • Recommended by the ArsTechnica Road Warriors Guide, so it must be VERY good!!

  • fanstastic!

  • Would have been cheaper to buy this to connect my xbox than the 15m cat5 cable I purchased a few days ago!

  • If this works for the Xbox 360, it has to get my +1!

Considering the proper Xbox 360 wireless gadget is in excess of $100 retail price, this is a steal.

Only downside I can see is the extra power plug needed. But it shouldn't consume too much power.

    • Confirmed that I do have it working on my Xbox 360 and my older Xbox. The device can be powered via USB and comes with both the AC/DC plug and the usb power cable.

      • So no problem being powered by the rear USB port on the 360?

  • Is the power supply multi-voltage? I.e. does it work at 110 Volts (US, Japan, etc), as well as 240 Volts? If so, that'd be quite useful in a portable device.

  • Has anyone ordered from these guys online before? I'm not from QLD, so I cannot pickup from the store.

    Any feedback on their services?

I noticed they don't have secure padlocks on their transaction pages, which is a bit dodgy…

  • Just put in an order.

They only accept payment by direct deposit if you're not in QLD. Having a go now and seeing what happens. Will let you know…

    • oh, really? I put an order and set payment by credit card. Shipping address is in NSW. I've received a notification and I'm waiting for a confirmation letter.

    • But it doesn't state how much the shipping is when you're checking out and there's a note there saying "A freight charge will apply, Brisbane Metro Min $15.00 charge. Please contact us regarding other areas, OR transport of your choice."

  • Have just tried calling the store but it rings out… Also sent an email yesterday night regarding delivery outside of QLD but haven't received a reply yet.

  • Just got a reply in regards to delivery:

"Thank you for your inquiry with us, there will be $15 for freight to ship
your order to 20XX (NSW). We will confirm about the total cost and bank
details with you once we have received the order and processed that into
    our system."

  • All Gone. Out of stock

  • REALLY? DAMN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • I'm confused, where is $25?

    • You mean, where was $25 .. that bird has flown the coop, the best price elsewhere seems to be $49 now.

      • bahh I drive past PC Shopper every day too. Poo on a stick.

  • A quick quide for Xbox 360 config.

    1. Update Firmware - Extremely important, wont work without it.
    2. Make sure G730AP is set to Client mode (switch underneath device)
    3. Set up computer with static ip in 192.168.0.0 /24 range, connect network cable to G730AP, point web browser to 192.168.0.30
    4. Run Wizard to setup wireless WPA keys, restart device. Confirm via your Access Point (not the G730) that it is handshaking succesfully.
    5. Set G730AP to Dynamic IP and restart.
    6. Attach to Xbox, making sure Xbox is set to DHCP mode.
    7. All should work, the G730 probably needs to be powered cycle every week (mine does), I normally do it before turning Xbox on.

Any problems, contact me via this site and Ill see if I can help.

    • Quick question, after step 5, set to dynamic ip and restart, can you still access the admin pages from your ethernet connection?

It seems with me, while plugged into the laptop, I can no longer get to the page after I set my network card back to auto. Also I cannot access the admin pages if I try to set it to 192.168.1.5.

However the good news is that I can then surf the web. I can see that it's working.

But if I plug it into the Xbox 360, it cannot even connect to the G730AP, let alone Xbox Live. The Xbox 360 is also set to auto for everything network related.

      Thanks.

      • After Step 5, try setting your laptop Network Connection from Static to DHCP and see if it assigns you an IP on your laptop (it should as that what occurs with the XBOX 360).

In theory, if your on your router you should be able to see 2 IPs on your Wireless DHCP lease table. One for the G730 and one for the XBOX. You cant access the admin pages via the wireless (I think its a security prevention issue).

Also, make sure the switch on the bottom is set to Client (middle setting). The bottom switch on my 2 are notorious for switching back to AP/RT mode (which throws a spanner in the works) ever so easily.

To Add: These things can take a couple of goes to get working right..but once their done its all good.

        • thanks for the pointers.

but it works well with my laptop. my network on my router is 192.168.1.1-255.

it does assign the laptop and G730AP its own IP address, e.g. 192.168.1.2 and 192.168.1.8

However when I connect it with the Xbox 360, on the Xbox 360 settings, it never gets an automatic address, it stays in the 169.x.x.x range, which is the default one, meaning it can't get the address.

I'll have to buy a cross over cable to try it out because I don't think it's compatible in some strange way.

The only way I can get it to work with the Xbox 360 is to set a manual address, e.g. 192.168.1.36, however the NAT for Xbox Live doesn't work correctly.

          cheers.

          • @jashjash: I connect perfectly to XBOX Live so its not a functionality issue with the device. I use the default Grey LAN cable that came with my xbox to connect to the router, which is a straight through I believe.

Hmmm..thats a strange issue. It does give your Laptop a DHCP address but not the xbox, but setting the xbox static means you get connectivity (but no XBOX live)… I still dont think its the cable. Got a friend who has another XBOX ?? Get him to bring it round to test :).

            • @danielpenna: dug out my old xbox 360 box, and it had the network cable supplied in there.

plugged that in instead and unfortunately the same issue.

the thing that gets me is that with my laptop, it works perfectly!

ah well, i'm sure i can ebay this thing for more than i bought it.

              Cheers.

  • :( sounds difficult

thanks kindly for the deal and the guide

  • Bought it this morning for $25, fantastic deal. Shipping to Victoria is another $25. Quite expensive for such a small device, but I'm fairly sure it should be courier shipping.

Still beats any other price on the net at the moment.

  • I ordered two yesterday. The shipping (to Victoria also) is $25 for both of them. Not sure I can really justify paying $75 for something that I really don't need now, but perhaps later. Oh well, I did make the order, so I guess I'd better just pay. And later worry about what I'm actually going to do with them. I'm just a sucker for bargains.

    • For me, it's a good gift idea for relatives who have routers but no wifi, so this will do nicely :)

    • So… so far I've heard

      1 x item - shipping = $25
      2 x items - shipping = $25

I placed an order for :
6 x items - shipping = $50 for the lot… shipping costs really doesn't really make much sense!

are they trying to recoup costs on shipping???
